Northerners Won’t Accept Single-Term Promise — Reuben Abati Warns Desperate Politicians

Nigerian journalist Reuben Abati has claimed that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, and other opposition coalition members’ proposal for a one-term government will fail.
On Monday, August 4, 2025, Abati reportedly revealed this information during an appearance on the morning broadcast on Arise TV.

The media figure said that politicians that promise a single term are desperate because it will not work.

Because Nigeria’s civil war is still ongoing, the former presidential adviser stated that he does not think Northerners, who are already upset about a Yoruba president, will accept the prospect of an Igbo president.

“Any politician who approaches you and says, ‘I’m going to serve only one term,’ that is a symptom of desperation,” he remarked. That won’t work. This tactic of serving food, carrying plates, and acting like a boy boy at gatherings that may be better planned by event planners is also an indication of desperation. That doesn’t work. No, it won’t work.

The second difficulty is that you claimed the North would support the one-term idea. No! Because of the ongoing civil war in this nation, the North will not. Northerners who are already unhappy with a Yoruba president, in my opinion, won’t simply change their minds and accept the prospect of an Igbo president. There are inconsistencies in this nation that have not been resolved.
