A yet-to-be-identified motorboy lost his life while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries in two accidents that occurred at the Saapade and the Mowe sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday.
TheNigerian Metro gathered from traffic update reports by the Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, that both accidents occurred in the early hours of the day.
According to Ogunyemi, the Saapade crash involved 21 people, including 17 adults and four children.
He stressed that the accident occurred when a Mack truck collided with a Nissan bus after losing control because of brake failure.
The TRACE boss noted that six persons sustained injuries from the impact of the collision and were rescued by Good Samaritans to a nearby hospital before the arrival of emergency responders.
He said, “Serious RTA/RTC at Saapade Inbound Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ode-Remo, involving a Mack truck White with number plate KSF 960 XT and a Nissan bus with number plate JJJ 594 YC.
“According to an eyewitness, the accident was caused by brake failure of the tanker. The occupants were 21 adults, including nine males, eight females, three male children, and one female child.
“Six people were injured, including five females and one male child. The injured victims were taken to the hospital by Good Samaritans before arrival.”
Giving an update on the second accident in the Mowe area, Ogunyemi disclosed that a truck driver had parked on a section of the road while another truck driver who was speeding rammed into the parked truck.
The impact of the collision was said to have led to the death of the motorboy, who was trapped in the crash.
He stressed that another adult male sustained injury in the crash, which involved four adult males.
In his words, “According to an eyewitness, the Howo truck parked at the service lane, while the driver of the Benz truck hit it from the rear due to excessive speed coupled with a loss of control, which led to the death of the motor boy.
“The driver of the said truck that was parked quickly moved his truck and hid it in front of AIM Company, which was fished out by the police, while the injured victim was rescued before our arrival at a yet unknown hospital.”
He identified the vehicles involved as a Benz truck with the number plate EPE 224 XA and a Howo truck with the number plate GGE 149 XA.
“The remains of the Benz truck motor boy who was trapped in the vehicle were removed by TRACE, FRSC, police operatives, and some Good Samaritans and handed over to the family,” Ogunyemi concluded.
