Organ trafficking: UK court sentences Ekweremadu to 9months’ jail term

A Court in the United Kingdom has jailed a former Nigerian Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife and a medical “middleman” for conspiring to traffic a market trader to harvest his kidney.

60-year-old Ekweremadu, his 56-year-old wife Beatrice, and their 25-year-old daughter, Sonia, were accused of conspiracy to bring the man to Britain from Lagos for his organ.

TNN reports that the couple, along with medical “middleman”, 50-year-old Obinna Obeta, were found guilty in the Old Bailey in March.

Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months’ imprisonment, his wife bagged four years and six months in jail while the medic got a 10-year jail term.
