Orji Kalu Backs Down On Presidential Bid, Cites APC Loyalty

Senator Orji Kalu, who represents Abia North in the National Assembly and chairs the Senate Committee on Privatization, has declared that his presidential ambitions will be postponed till President Bola Tinubu completes his second term.
Kalu stated that he cannot run for president against the party, which has already approved President Bola Tinubu for a second term ending in 2031.
Speaking to reporters in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, on Tuesday, the legislator stated that his presidential ambition is on hold and will be rekindled once Tinubu completes his second term in office.

He stated, “I am a member of the APC, and our party has comfortably approved President Tinubu. So, even if I have presidential ambitions, they are on hold for the time being since I am unable to oppose the party. The party reigns supreme. President Tinubu is enjoying party supremacy, which will lead to his election. Who says I can’t run for President in God’s time, after President Tinubu leaves office in 2031? It’s possible.

The lawmaker further stated that if the people thought he was worthy of reelection, he would run for the Abia North senatorial district seat again in 2027.

He declared, “In 2027, I will run for re-election to the Senate. I will run if our people believe I am worthy. In six years as a senator, he has completed over 187 roads, whereas I have completed over 123 elementary schools.

Speaking on President Tinubu’s success during the last two years, Kalu stated, “I work closely with him. Within two years, the President has achieved remarkable success. If we can offer him the rewards of finishing another two years and serving another term, I believe the economy will undergo significant adjustments.”

The Abia senator said President Tinubu’s endorsement for another second term is not rushed, as is being assumed in some quarters, and that the party did the correct thing to urge him to do more.

According to him, “The party did the right thing because we are in the midterms and we need to encourage the President to do more.” The sitting President has the right to run for reelection, and we will fully support him.”
