Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reportedly granted freedom to not less than 31 prisoners in the state as a mark of freedom which democracy represents.
The governor made this known via a tweet he shared on his Twitter handle.
He based his actions on the prerogative of mercy bestowed on governors and the president in Nigeria by section 212 of the 1999 constitution as amended
The prisoners have by this action of the governor become discharged and acquitted of whatever crime they might have committed.
“To mark Democracy Day, I granted pardons to 35 prisoners in Oyo State as provided for under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Fed Rep of Nig 1999 (as amended). Our Democracy Day celebrations will be low-key as we reflect on the significance of June 12. Happy Democracy Day!,” Makinde wrote.
