The next local government elections will be held throughout the state, according to plans released by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission.
According to reports, the commission scheduled the polls for Saturday, January 16, 2027, and they would be held in all voting places throughout Oyo State’s 33 local government areas.
On election day, voting is anticipated to start at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m.
At the conclusion of the commission’s initial meeting with its management staff, which took place at the OYSIEC headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan, a decision was made.
Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, the commission’s chairman, presided over the meeting, which was centered on organizing and exchanging ideas for a successful council election.
Political campaigns will formally end by midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027, according to OYSIEC.
Additionally, it specified that a supplemental or rerun election would take place on Saturday, January 23, 2027, if necessary.
The commission also stated that, in accordance with the state’s present local government statute, the incumbent chairman and council members of the 33 local government councils will leave office on May 23, 2027.
According to OYSIEC, the statement was made in accordance with the authority afforded to it by pertinent provisions of the Electoral Act and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law, which permit the commission to announce elections far in advance.
In order to guarantee the smooth running of the local government elections set for January 2027, the commission urged candidates, political parties, security services, and other interested parties to collaborate with it.
