Abdulrahman Mohammed, the factional acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that his leadership is reversing the party’s decline that began before to the 2015 elections.
According to Mohammed, the party’s abandonment of its zoning ideals prior to the 2015 elections marked the beginning of the decline.
He gave a speech on Friday at the opening of a new Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja.
Mohammed bemoaned the fact that party leaders let their own aspirations take precedence above justice.
“We must also be honest with ourselves—the decay we are correcting today did not begin yesterday,” he stated. It started when, prior to the 2015 elections, we gave up on the zoning concept.
It started when we disregarded the calls of reason from inside our own ranks and let ambition triumph over equity. We are still plagued by the fallout from their choices.
However, God has given us another opportunity to rebuild because of His wisdom. Restoration, reconciliation, and rebirth are the opportunities that lie ahead of us now. And I come before you to reassure every member of this wonderful party that the PDP will never again be kept captive by manipulation, impunity, or disdain for its own constitution under this new leadership.
“This party will be rebuilt in an open manner. The rule of law and court rulings shall be respected. We’ll hold fair and honest congresses. We’ll rebuild public confidence and restore the PDP to its position as Nigeria’s moral voice.
“We can’t keep hiding behind the outdated justification that “party concerns are internal affairs.” Constitutional order still governs internal affairs. Lawlessness cannot be equated with party autonomy. Reform is necessary, or else we run the risk of becoming irrelevant.
As a result, let this inauguration usher in a new age in which respect for the rule of law becomes ingrained in our political culture, conscience takes the lead, and unity replaces division.
“Let history document that good-hearted people came up to pull the PDP back when it was on the brink of collapse. Let it be recorded that we chose principle over politics, truth over silence, and reform over insurrection.
“We can mend our party together. Our members’ trust can be restored if we work together. By working together, we can make the PDP the real hope for Nigeria’s democratic future.
