Former LP presidential candidate Peter Obi has disclosed why he chose to give the University of Calabar School of Dentistry ₦20 million.
He clarified that his goal in making the donation was to lessen the financial strain on students.
Obi bemoaned the government’s disregard for what he called the most fundamental educational needs of pupils, while political leaders lived lavish lives.
“Failed leadership is directly responsible for the current state of affairs at UNICAL,” the former governor of Anambra State stated while speaking at the Calabar Airport. Our political mistakes must be left to be borne mostly by our offspring.

“We spend millions on luxury for those in political office, but young Nigerians who are trying to further their education are not given the bare necessities.” It ought not to be.
Obi said that the circumstances at the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Dentistry were a clear example of a leadership breakdown in Nigeria’s educational system. He stated that the donation of ₦20 million was intended to help upgrade the faculty’s vital infrastructure.
He stated, “This token will assist in the purchase of 15 more dental chairs, which is a crucial requirement established by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for increasing the faculty’s student intake.”
Inadequate facilities had seriously impeded the academic progress of the impacted pupils, thus he encouraged the authorities to take their hardship into consideration.
Obi emphasized that the future of the nation rests on the level of education and empowerment of its people and urged other well-meaning Nigerians and leaders to support organizations like UNICAL.
