Vice President Kashim Shettima has paid a condolence visit to Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, and other members of the former President’s family in London.
The visit came shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially announced Buhari’s death, which occurred in London on Sunday following a prolonged illness. According to a statement from the Presidency, Buhari passed away at approximately 4:30 p.m. while receiving medical attention in the United Kingdom.
Photographs from the visit show Vice President Shettima with the visibly grief-stricken former First Lady, Aisha Buhari. The meeting was part of the government’s efforts to honor the late leader and console his family.
President Tinubu has directed that national flags be flown at half-mast in honor of Buhari, and also instructed Vice President Shettima to accompany the former President’s body back to Nigeria.
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985 before being democratically elected President in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.
