Plenary Resumes: Lawmakers to Probe Local Government Accounts, Others – Udom

On October 7, when the 10th Senate reconvenes, MPs are anticipated to discuss important national concerns, such as the hotly contested topic of local government autonomy.

In a statement released on Sunday, Senate President Jackson Udom, Special Assistant on Media, listed the main priorities for the upcoming plenary.

Legislators will also consider the 2026 Appropriations Bill, security, economic growth, constitutional revision, and electoral reforms, he said.

When plenary reconvenes, it is anticipated that MPs would support the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government authority. According to Udom, this will guarantee the administrative and financial autonomy of councils throughout the nation.

He clarified that governors continued to manage cash intended for councils through joint accounts in spite of the historic decision.

Udom added that the Senate will give top attention to the 2026 Appropriations Bill, which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must submit by the end of the year.

“It is anticipated that the budget will tackle issues such as inflation, joblessness, and instability,” he continued.

Measures to improve national security and peace, electoral changes, and constitutional modifications are anticipated to be among the other topics on the agenda.

He claims that in order to guarantee accountability and openness in governance, the 10th Senate and its leadership have underlined the significance of legislative oversight.
