In an effort to combat cybercrime, the Nigeria Police Force has provided training to 192 officers nationwide on how to use the Athena Forensic Intelligence Solution (AFIS).
According to reports, officers from all 36 state commands, the Federal Capital Territory, and 10 specialized units participated in the training, which took place from July 9 to August 15, 2025, and was organized in collaboration with Radio Tactics Group Limited.
The Force claims that the training was created to develop forensic and digital skills for better investigations.
Officers received training on how to recognize threats and process and retrieve data from satellite phones, GPS units, SIM cards, and other mobile devices.
Additionally, they were trained in biometric capture and the use of forensic hotlists to link operational data with intelligence information.
The police also reported that three people had been arrested as part of their stepped-up efforts to combat cybercrime.
In Abuja and Lagos, Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke were arrested for online fraud, identity theft, and cyberstalking.
According to investigations, on July 18, 2025, the suspects compromised a WhatsApp account, got in touch with the owner, and demanded ₦3 million in order to keep private information safe.
They were apprehended and the compromised account was recovered after forensic investigation linked the activity to them.
Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, reiterated that the Force will keep implementing digital strategies and enhancing officer training to meet international standards in combating cybercrime.
