Presidency Affirms EFCC Will Not Be Used Against Opposition Figures

The Presidency has assured that President Bola Tinubu will never deploy the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to harass opposition politicians.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were voluntary and motivated by confidence in President Tinubu’s reform agenda.

Onanuga described claims that democracy is under threat as baseless and self-serving, emphasizing that the Constitution guarantees freedom of association and the right to change political affiliation. “No individual was coerced into joining the governing party,” he added.

The spokesperson also dismissed allegations that the EFCC was being weaponised, stressing that the anti-graft agency operates independently and within its statutory mandate. “President Tinubu does not issue directives to any anti-corruption agency on whom to investigate, arrest, or prosecute,” Onanuga said.

He urged those with cases before the EFCC to defend themselves through due process, rather than politicise accountability, noting that some critics had faced investigations even before Tinubu assumed office in 2023.

Onanuga further called on political actors to respect national institutions and support the fight against corruption, stating, “The fight against corruption is a shared responsibility and must not be trivialised by politicised narratives.”
