President Tinubu Confirms Buhari’s Death, Sends Shettima to UK to Repatriate Body

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London following a prolonged illness.

 

According to a statement from the presidency, Buhari passed away at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. In response, Tinubu reached out to the late president’s wife, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, offering his condolences and expressing national grief.

 

As part of the official response, the president has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria. The government has also ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the late leader.

 

Muhammadu Buhari was a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s political history. He served as the country’s democratic president from 2015 to 2023, after a previous tenure as military head of state between 1984 and 1985.

 

His death brings to a close a long chapter in Nigeria’s political evolution, and tributes have continued to pour in from across the nation and the global community.

 

Details of funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days, as the country enters a period of official mourning.
