Reps Launch Probe into N1.06 Trillion NG-CARES Social Intervention Program

The House of Representatives Committee on NG-CARES has launched an investigation into the N1.06 trillion ($696 million) Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) program. The committee, chaired by Abubakar Kusada, began the probe in Abuja on Wednesday to assess the effectiveness of the program, noting that many Nigerians have not felt the intended impact of the social intervention.

Kusada emphasized that despite the federal government releasing funds and providing operational guidelines, there appears to be a disconnect between funding and benefits reaching the vulnerable populations. He said, “It is most surprising that the effect of these palliatives is not being felt by the target groups in Nigeria after the government has committed so many resources.”

The committee intends to investigate allegations of fund misappropriation, diversion, and inflated contracts. They will also verify whether the grants and social transfers to states and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSEs) were properly utilized. Kusada warned that states failing to provide verification will be publicly named.

The investigation aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and value for money (VFM) in the disbursement of NG-CARES funds, addressing public concerns over government neglect and economic hardship.
