The House of Representatives has suggested holding presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative elections on the same day in an attempt to increase voter turnout in Nigeria.
The revelation was made Thursday in Abuja by Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
Speaking to a group from the European Union, or EU, Abbas clarified that the plan is a component of the larger election reforms being examined.
“It is to hold the presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly membership elections on the same day to help reduce our electoral process, particularly on the voter turnout,” he stated, referring to the single-day election.
“We will take the necessary steps to ensure that INEC has all the resources and provisions required to improve the 2027 election over the 2023 election.”
Nonetheless, he called on the European Union to back campaigns for awareness and advocacy.
According to reports, the National Assembly is scheduled to vote this month on a number of initiatives that would amend the constitution.
