SDNON demands road safety reforms after journalists’ deaths

The Society of Digital Newspaper Owners of Nigeria, SDNON, has urged authorities to take stronger action to prevent avoidable deaths on the nation’s roads, following the tragic deaths of seven journalists and media professionals in Gombe State.

Recall that the fatal accident occurred along the Biliri–Kumo road, leaving the Nigerian media industry and the country in mourning.
In a statement dated January 1, 2026, and signed by SDNON President Dr. Adeniyi Ifetayo, the society described the incident as a devastating loss.

He praised the deceased as dedicated professionals whose work in public enlightenment and service would be remembered.
SDNON extended condolences to the Gombe State Government, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the management and staff of the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, StarTimes, the Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board, and the wider media community.

The organization also expressed sympathy for those injured in the crash, wishing them a speedy and full recovery.
SDNON also mourned two additional fatalities in a separate accident involving British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The society prayed for comfort for the bereaved families and a swift recovery for Joshua.

SDNON further called for collective efforts to improve road safety nationwide, emphasizing the urgent need to prevent such tragedies in the future.
