The FCT Police Command has reportedly detained Senator Elisha Abbo for allegedly assaulting a nursing mother at an adult toy shop in Abuja.

Police Commissioner, Mr Bala Ciroma, in a telephone interview with Channels Television disclosed that the Senator is being detained to enhance a smooth and thorough investigation by the detectives handling the matter.

Abbo who is a member of the 9th National Assembly representing Adamawa North Senatorial District was seen in a video that has since generated negative reactions from the public, slapping a nursing mother.

Mr Abbo, a member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), first met the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, on Thursday at the Force headquarters before heading to the command for questioning.

The embattled legislator had wept and apologised to the woman on Wednesday during a press briefing he organised to address matters over the video.

Vice Presidential candidate of PDP in the February 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, had advised Abbo to turn himself in to show example as a young leader.

The IGP had also ordered FCT police commissioner, Bala Ciroma, to carry out forensic investigation of the footage which showed Abbo repeatedly slapping his victim over what appeared to be a minor disagreement while a police officer looked on.

Support our journalism with a contribution of any size

TheNigerian is one of the unique platforms helping to shape the global narrative about Nigeria and her citizens across the world. It's quite costly to maintain this brand of journalism, however.

Readers from around the world, like you, make TheNigerian's work possible. We need your support to deliver quality, investigative journalism – and to keep it open for everyone. At a time when factual, honest reporting is critical, your support is essential in protecting our editorial independence. Every contribution, however big or small, is so valuable for our future.

Our brand of professional citizens' journalism requires a contribution from members of the public, patronage and sponsorship to thrive. We rely on this financial support to be able to carry out our numerous obligations of training, running cost, production, printing and general services. We also embark on Corporate Social Responsibilities through educational programs on our TV, newspaper and blogs.
