Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has resigned from the social network firm’s board and has urged his replacement be a black candidate.
Mr Ohanian announced his decision on social media, saying resignation can be a form of leadership, and has pledged $1 million to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp, a campaign for legal awareness among youth.
During his announcement, Mr Ohanian, who is married to American tennis star Serena Williams, said one day his black daughter will ask him what he did to fight racial inequality.
“Fifteen years ago, I co-founded Reddit as a place for people to find community and a sense of belonging,” he said.
“I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate.”
The social media platform has been used in the past by some of its users to incite racism and hate.
In a statement, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said Mr Ohanian’s request for a black replacement would be met, while also apologising for the company’s inaction against users fuelling racism and hate on the platform.
“I want to take responsibility for the history of our policies over the years that got us here, and we still have work to do,” he said.
