Sexagenarian trapped in Lagos well hospitalised

A 63-year-old man, Akin Kuboye, has been hospitalised after being trapped in a 120-metre-deep well in the Igando area of Lagos State on Sunday.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

Adeseye noted that Kuboye was carrying out repair work inside the well when he got trapped thereby raising concerns among residents.

Upon receiving the report, the LSFRS operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene of the incident and were able to rescue the victim.

She said, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to a life-threatening distress call, Sunday 09:54 hours at 20, Muyibi Adebayo Street, off Agric Road, Egan – Igando, Lagos.

“On arrival at the scene of the emergency, it was discovered that a 63-year-old man, Akin Kuboye, reportedly got trapped incidentally while working in a 120m deep well at the rear side of a bungalow building consisting of 14 rooms of varying sizes, on a premise covering an area of about 648 square metres.

“However, the tenacity of the Ejigbo Rescue Crew of the agency successfully brought the acclaimed plumber alive from the well and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service team that stabilised him from the effect of inhaled ammonia gas before transporting him to a hospital for further treatment.”

Also speaking on the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the victim sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The PS corroborated that the victim had slipped while carrying out repair work inside the well.

“Upon arrival of LASEMA’s Dolphin Response Team at the incident scene, it was discovered that an adult, male, fell into a well at the above-mentioned address.

“Investigations gathered at the scene reveal that the victim, a plumber, was carrying out repair works on one of the pipes in the well, however, his leg slipped, and caused him to fall into the well,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
