Six feared dead, four rescued in Lagos boat mishap

At least six passengers have been confirmed dead, while four others were rescued following a boat accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos State.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, involving a passenger boat operated by Savvy Marine.
The vessel was said to be travelling from Ilashe Beach House when the mishap happened.

As of the time of filing this report, search and rescue operations were still ongoing to locate other passengers who may have been affected.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, and the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, confirmed the incident in a joint statement signed by NIWA’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Wuraola Alake, and LASWA’s Head of Corporate Affairs Unit, Omowunmi Yussuff.

According to the statement, emergency response teams from both agencies were immediately deployed after a distress call was received.
The rescue effort was carried out in collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders.
“Four passengers were rescued alive and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.Unfortunately, six other passengers were recovered dead at the scene. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing to account for all individuals involved,” the statement said.

Preliminary findings suggest that the boat may have collided with a submerged object, although authorities noted that investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
LASWA and NIWA expressed their condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring safety on Lagos inland waterways.
The agencies also reminded waterway users to strictly adhere to safety guidelines, including proper navigation procedures and compliance with the “no night travel” policy.

Members of the public were advised to remain calm and rely only on verified information from LASWA, NIWA, and other official sources as investigations continue.
