Following a strategic conference with Service Chiefs and senior military personnel to evaluate operational tactics across several theaters of action countrywide, Musa made the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to him, the purpose of the conference was to evaluate the state of security at the moment and bolster continuing efforts to combat terrorists and other criminal elements that pose a threat to national security.

“We reviewed our plan in all of our theaters across the nation during a brief discussion with members of the services.

He stated, “We are aware of the problems on the ground, but I want to reassure Nigerians that members of the Armed Forces are working tirelessly to ensure that Nigeria is safe and secure.”

The minister emphasized that terrorists and bandits were incurring greater losses, even if the military had reported some casualties during operations.

“We are aware that we have lost some people, but I can assure you that bandits and terrorists are taking more.”

He continued, “We are eliminating more of their commanders and destroying their assets, and we will continue to do that.”

Noting that combating insecurity necessitated a whole-of-government and society approach, Musa encouraged Nigerians to keep supporting the Armed Forces and other security services.

He cautioned against the dissemination of misleading material on social media, emphasizing that it could compromise security initiatives and lower soldier morale.

He said that instead of depending on unreliable internet reports, residents should constantly confirm security-related information with the Armed Forces.

The minister also urged media outlets to act professionally and refrain from spreading films and other content created by criminal organizations in order to prevent spreading terrorist propaganda.

“You give them the chance to shine and use it as propaganda to demoralize our troops when you use their videos and pictures,” he stated.

Musa further cautioned that anyone giving terrorists information or logistical support would be considered an accomplice and advised Nigerians to report suspicious activity to security services as soon as possible.

He congratulated Olatunji Disu, the new Inspector-General of Police, and praised President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing support of the Armed Forces and other security services.

He promised to work closely with the new IGP to solve security issues.

The conference takes place during a period of increased terrorist and bandit attacks in the country’s northeast, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

While holding ground against the militants, the military has lost several men in the past week.

Similarly, numerous terrorists and their leaders have been killed in recent operations around the theater.

On Wednesday, however, the Senate expressed serious worry about the tragic attack on a Nigerian Army formation and lamented the troops who lost their lives in the Kukawa incident in Borno.

Following a motion made by Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno North) during plenary in Abuja, the senate observed a minute of silence for the troops, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The motion was made by Monguno, who stated that troops stationed in Kukawa Local Government Area were the target of a coordinated attack by suspected militants in the early hours of March 9.

According to him, the soldiers engaged in a protracted struggle that lasted about 24 hours as the assailants came from multiple directions, but they valiantly fought.

The senator expressed particular sorrow over the passing of Lt.-Col. Umar Farouq, characterizing him as a pivotal player in the reestablishment of calm in Kukawa following an insurgent raid.

“Lt.-Col. Farouk was instrumental in helping displaced residents return,” he recounted.

The congressman described the incident as a part of ongoing rebel offensives and said that weapons were looted and numerous military vehicles were destroyed during the assault.

According to him, the attack occurred in spite of current counter-insurgency efforts under Operation Hadin Kai, which are meant to destroy terrorist networks in the Northeast.

Monguno added that one soldier was killed on Wednesday morning when rebels attacked Doro, a different hamlet in Kukawa Local Government Area.

He stated, “I received reports of another attack even this morning as I came to present this motion.”

However, the congressman praised the officers’ and soldiers’ bravery and selflessness in maintaining Nigeria’s territorial integrity and shielding people from rebel attacks.

“We honor their courage, tenacity, and devotion. According to Monguno, “their efforts have helped reclaim territories once firmly controlled by Boko Haram insurgents.”

Sen. Shehu Lawal (APC Borno Central), who seconded the resolution, stated that immediate action was required due to the worrisome rate of the insurgency’s renewed comeback in Borno.

“I also want to thank the troops for continuing to carry out their duties. He stated, “They remained steadfast in their fight against this insurgency in order to let our people sleep soundly.”

The senate then observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the troops who, according to the senate, gave their lives to protect the nation from rebel attacks.

Additionally, the senate praised the soldiers of Operation Hadin Kai for their tenacity and dedication to protecting people throughout Nigeria’s unstable northeast.

In order to bolster the continuing efforts to put an end to the insurgency, the lawmakers also encouraged the Nigerian Armed Forces to step up intelligence collection, surveillance, and logistical support.

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, praised Monguno for his assistance to the Nigerian army in the Northeast zone as the discussion came to a close.

According to Akpabio, President Bola Tinubu is making every effort to address the nation’s insecurity.

However, the Federal Government of Nigeria has been given seven working days by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) to apprehend and punish terrorists who are purportedly known to the government.

This came after Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi made bombshell assertions that the government knew the identities and whereabouts of every terrorist active in the nation.

The civil rights organization issued a warning that if Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration did not take decisive action within the allotted time, it would be forced to escalate the situation internationally. This would involve formal petitions to Donald Trump, the US Congress, and the International Criminal Court requesting an investigation into what it called the Nigerian government’s “apparent tolerance or protection of terrorists responsible for mass killings across the country.”

HURIWA said in a strongly worded statement released in Abuja on Wednesday that Gumi’s recent broadcast remarks had highlighted serious legal and national security issues that the federal authorities need to address immediately.

The organization remembered that the Kaduna-based cleric openly stated in an interview on DRTV that the Nigerian government is aware of every terrorist’s identify and precise location within the nation.

Additionally, Gumi maintained that security forces were aware of and present throughout his contentious excursions to bandit camps.

Gumi claims that “the government knows every terrorist by name and location” and that the police, military, and other security organizations accompany him when he interacts with armed groups.

In response to the revelation, HURIWA stated that if the assertion is accurate, it would represent one of the most startling acknowledgements of official failure in Nigeria’s continuous fight against terrorism.

The comment attributed to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi is deeply unsettling to HURIWA.

Nigerians should know why these criminals continue to roam freely, abducting schoolchildren, killing farmers, attacking towns, and destabilizing the country if the Federal Government does, in fact, know every terrorist by name and location as alleged, the organization added.

The group maintained that the ongoing violence in many states cannot be justified if the government already has actionable intelligence identifying terrorists and their hiding places.

The statement went on, “We are therefore giving the Federal Government of Nigeria seven working days to arrest the terrorists whose identities and locations are allegedly known to the authorities and to immediately begin their prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.”

HURIWA further contended that the cleric’s continuing freedom raises severe concerns about Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategy, given his acknowledged contacts with terrorist organizations.

“Why haven’t security forces invited Sheikh Gumi for in-depth interrogation or inquiry if he genuinely knows a great deal about the identities and locations of terrorists?

His claim that the government is already aware of these terrorists but has not taken anything is supported by his freedom from inspection, according to the group.

The rights group threatened to launch international legal campaign to hold Nigeria’s government responsible for what it defined as crimes against humanity resulting from ongoing terrorist assaults if no significant action is made within seven working days.

“HURIWA will formally petition the United States Congress, President Donald Trump’s administration, and the International Criminal Court to demand a global inquiry into the Nigerian government’s handling of terrorism, including the possibility that state complicity or negligence is enabling these atrocities,” the statement read.

According to the group, if authorities intentionally refuse to stop ongoing massacres, kidnappings, and attacks on civilians in Nigeria, they qualify as crimes against humanity under international law.

Additionally, HURIWA listed a number of legal sources that established that people may be held criminally liable if they know about major crimes but choose not to notify or take action.

Section 10 of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, which makes it illegal to knowingly support, facilitate, or withhold information about terrorist operations, was cited by the organization.

The organization also cited sections of the Criminal Code Act that acknowledge the crime of accessory after the fact, which occurs when someone intentionally helps criminals avoid punishment.

HURIWA also referenced the seminal decision of R v. Sykes, which established criminal liability for anyone who intentionally aids criminals or protects them from prosecution.

The Nigerian Supreme Court’s ruling in FRN v. Osahon, another pertinent authority, reiterated the obligation of people and law enforcement organizations to work together to prosecute criminals and stop impunity.

The rights group claims that these court rulings uphold the idea that having reliable knowledge of illegal activity but failing to disclose or prevent it could be considered cooperation.

“Silence or inactivity in the face of known criminal activity might amount to aiding and abetting criminality, according to the law. Because of this, the Federal Government needs to quickly ascertain whether Sheikh Gumi’s allegations are true and, if so, take fast action to neutralize these terrorists, according to HURIWA.

The organization emphasized that at a time when millions of Nigerians live in constant fear of terrorist assaults, the ultimatum is meant to force openness and swift action.

“HURIWA would not watch helplessly as Nigerians are killed on a regular basis. The time for justifications is past if the government is aware of these terrorists’ whereabouts.

The group said, “Now is the time for arrests and prosecution.

The Army disclosed this in a statement on Friday after intelligence-led cordon-and-search operations conducted at the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on New Year’s Day.

However, according to the statement as reported by Zagazola, the operation led to the arrest of 14 suspects linked to suicide bombing activities, with subsequent investigations uncovering the structure, roles and operational linkages of the terror cell.
It said a suspected suicide bomber currently in custody, Ibrahim Muhammad, identified Shariff Umar as the ringleader who recruited, prepared and dispatched suicide bombers to assigned targets.

“Consistent and corroborated statements revealed that Shariff Umar coordinated logistics and the delivery of improvised explosive device (IED) components for suicide attacks,” the statement partly read.
The Army said investigations further established that Umar directly coordinated the suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque on Christmas Eve, in which his accomplice, identified as Adamu, detonated a suicide vest and died in the process.
He was additionally associated with the thwarted suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, having reportedly delivered IED parts to the intended attacker in Maiduguri, the statement stated.

The Army disclosed that additional intelligence pointed to the involvement of Umar’s spouse, Yagana Modu, while his stepdaughter, Amina, corroborated having seen the alleged bomber at their home prior to the incident

An Army officer and a villager have been hospitalised while several cars were set ablaze in the Ette community of Ikot-Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State following a clash that erupted in the area on Tuesday.

Our correspondent gathered that the clash started following a misunderstanding between the Army officer and diesel thieves in the community.

A community source who pleaded not to be mentioned told our correspondent in Uyo on Wednesday that trouble started when the army officer (name withheld) was pursuing diesel thieves in an attempt to arrest them.

The source added that members of the community descended on him, and in an attempt to escape from the mob action, he shot at one of the villagers.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

The enraged residents, the source added, blocked a section of the East-West Road, forcing motorists going to Port Harcourt to divert to other routes for their safety.

Reacting, the Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, DSP Timfon John, who confirmed the incident, said the command had begun an investigation into the incident, which she noted had been brought under control.

According to her, “The command is aware of the incident. What actually happened was the case of an army officer who was pursuing diesel thieves. When the community descended on him, he attempted to escape from the mob action. So, he fired and eventually shot one of the villagers.

“The Army man and the villager who got shot have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the situation is under control, an investigation is ongoing and further details will be communicated.”

Rampaging youths protesting incessant harassments and extortions by military personnel have reportedly razed five military vehicles in angry reprisal following the gruesome murder of a youth activist by a soldier in Akwa Ibom State.

The incident, LEADERSHIP learnt, happened in the early hours of Wednesday in Ete, a coastal oil-bearing community of Ikot Abasi local government area of the State.

According to a resident, Effiong Ekwere, the soldiers attached to Sterling Global, an oil firm, were chasing a diesel-bearing truck allegedly for extortion, an action that infuriated the angry youths, who engaged one of them in a duel with the intent to disarm him.

The officer was said to have shot at the victim to scare and free himself from the mob, resulting in his instant death, thereby escalating the violence.

The Ete, Ikot Abasi portion of the East-West Road, sources said, was blocked for several hours, forcing vehicles and passengers coming into and out of Akwa Ibom State to and fro the neighbouring Rivers State, to be stranded.

“There’s crisis in Ete in Ikot Abasi LGA, an Army man that was on official duty at the Sterling Global company shot one of the community boys dead today, and they had shot another person dead as at last week.

“As a result of that, the community has now risen to tell them that enough is enough. That they should concentrate on doing their official duty at the company and leave the innocent citizens to be.

“For this, and other atrocious behaviours of the Army in the community, the youths set five of their trucks ablaze, including one bus and a Hilux van. Please, we are waiting for peace talk and government intervention on the issue,” the resident told our Correspondent.

Military sources from the 2 Brigade headquarters, Uyo, confirmed the incident, saying “the matter is already under control.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, also confirmed the development, saying the officer had been hospitalised and the remains of the victim deposited in the morgue, as investigations continued.

A Sudanese military plane has crashed in a residential area on the outskirts of the capital, Khartoum, killing several officers and civilians on ground.

The plane crashed late on Tuesday during takeoff from the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman, part of greater Khartoum, leaving more than 20 people dead, according to military sources quoted by the Reuters news agency.

The sources told Reuters that the plane crash was most likely due to technical reasons.

Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum, was reportedly among the dead.

The military, which has been at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, released a statement on Tuesday, saying military personnel and civilians had been killed, without providing further details.

“The injured have been taken to hospital and firefighting teams managed to contain the blaze at the crash site,” the statement said.

Residents in northern Omdurman reported a loud explosion from the crash, which damaged several homes and caused power outages in surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Karari Resistance Committee, part of a network of volunteers coordinating aid across Sudan, reported that 10 bodies and several injured people were brought to al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman, said a report by the AFP news agency.

The Army said the feat was achieved during a recent raid conducted in some states of the Niger Delta in collaboration with other security agencies.

This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Monday by the Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Jonah Danjuma.

“During the operations, over 70 sacks were confiscated along the SEEPCO Energy company pipeline within the Community, which led to the confiscation of over 2,800 litres of stolen products.
Additionally, troops intercepted the movement of a suspected oil thief, who fled and abandoned his vehicle at Emiye Street along Palace Road in Isoko South LGA.
As Buratai, Owaloko, others storm Kuta

The Olowu of Owu Kuta, HRM Oba Dr Hammeed Adekunle Makama, Tegbosun III, has declared that the Owu chieftaincy titles were not cheap, nor for sale, but for deserving individuals.

Oba Makama said this at his Palace in Kuta town, Osun State, on Tuesday, when he conferred chieftaincy titles on a retired Botswana Army officer, Brig.-Gen. Michael Mukomani, and a Saudi Arabia’s Princess, Ms Amani Bint Muhammed A Aljizani.

While Brig.-Gen. Mukomani was conferred with ‘Otun Balogun Agba’ of Owu Kuta Kingdom, which translates to the Right Hand Man of the King, Ms Amani was conferred with the title of ‘Erelu Fiwagboye’ of Owu Kuta, which entails that the honoree must have a community development initiative for Owu Kuta Kingdom.

Olowu, who praised Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff and one-time Ambassador to Benin Republic, Gen. TY Buratai (rtd), who accompanied the honourees to the palace, for his support and encouragement, said the retired Nigerian Army General has been adopted as Owu son.

Incidentally, Buratai also holds the chieftaincy title of Balogun Agba of Kuta.

Speaking earlier, Gen. Buratai explained how he met Gen. Mukomani at the War College in Bangladesh and the feat the latter had achieved in Botswana’s Army thereafter.

Buratai said, though Gen Mukomani couldn’t make it to the Botswana legislature in the last election, he’s optimistic that he will be successful in subsequent elections because of his sterling qualities.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included Oba Adedokun Abolarin, Orangun of Oke-Ila; Oba Hakeem Ogungbangbe, Owaloko of Iloko-Ijesu; Oba Kamodudeen Obaloyan; Oba Moses Agunsoye, Elebura of Ijebu-Ijesa, amongst others.

Responding on behalf of the newly installed Owu chiefs, the new Otun Balogun Agba said he was excited to be part of the tradition and development in Owu Kuta kingdom.

He assured Oba Makama that he would always work towards the progress and development of Owu Kuta Kingdom.

“I’m breathing in Yoruba culture, which you enjoy here today, and will take it back to Botswana. I thank you for the exceptional welcome that you have given to me and the entourage of General Buratai. I take this honour with great reverence and respect. I will be the true ambassador of Yoruba people,” he added.

Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Dauda Lawal, has commended the Department of State Services for its intelligence-sharing efforts that led to the interception of a large cache of arms and ammunition smuggled from Niger Republic.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the Coordinator, Joint Media Centre, Operation Fasan Yamma, Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, revealed that the operation, conducted on January 27, 2025, was based on actionable intelligence, TheNigerian Online reports earlier.

The governor, during an inspection of the seized weapons in Gusau, the state capital, on Tuesday night, lauded the DSS and the Nigerian Armed Forces for their swift action in neutralising the threat.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support of security agencies, which he credited for the success of the operation.

These details were contained in a Tuesday statement, titled, “Gov Lawal Inspects Seized Arms Cache, Lauds DSS.”

“This operation is a testament to the efficiency of our security agencies. I want to sincerely commend the DSS for its proactive intelligence-sharing, which led to this major breakthrough.

“I also extend my appreciation to President Tinubu for his commitment to making Zamfara State and the entire country safer,” Lawal was quoted as saying.

He assured all that his administration would continue to collaborate with security agencies to combat terrorism and crime in the state.

The operation, executed jointly by the DSS and troops of Operation Fansan Yamma on Monday and Tuesday, targeted a notorious arms courier, Abubakar Umar, also known as Dangada.

Security sources revealed that Umar had been tracked from Niger Republic to Kaura Namoda-Zurmi Road, where he intended to deliver the weapons to bandit leaders operating in the Birnin Magaji Local Government Area.

DSS intelligence indicated that the arms were meant for high-profile bandit kingpins, including Kachallah Atta, Alhaji Shinge, Alhaji Nashama, and a certain Zaki.

The traffickers, realising they had been ambushed, abandoned a red Abuja-registered Volkswagen Golf station wagon (RBC 731 GU) and fled with serious bullet wounds.

Upon searching the vehicle, security operatives discovered a deadly cache, including:

• Seven AK-47 rifles

• Two PKT General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG)

• Two AK-103 rifles

• 169 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition

• Nine PKT rounds of ammunition with one chain

• 13 empty magazines

The governor expressed confidence in the DSS ability to uphold national security and called for continued vigilance against criminal elements.

“This is a strong message to all those fueling insecurity in our state: we will not relent until peace is fully restored.

“I assure our security agencies of my government’s full support in this fight,” he declared.
