Onamade was shot and macheted to death on Saturday, March 8, 2025, while running for the chairperson of the Ijede Local Council Development.
Before the tragic day, the attackers had been pursuing the deceased, according to his brother Oluwafemi Onamade, who spoke to Punch.

Femi, who had previously escaped a similar attack with his brother, claimed that after the bullets fired by the gunmen’s firearms failed to pierce the victim’s body, they used a machete on him.

Around 9 p.m. on Saturday, it occurred. There were two shooters. They were completely unrecognizable because they were dressed in black. When he heard gunshots, his assistant claimed he was unable to wait. In front of his house, they macheted him and fired shots at him. It took place at Oluwatosin Onamade Street, his home in Ijede. He explained, “The street bears his name.

He was shot. He said, “They used machetes on his head and face when the bullets did not penetrate in time.”

He continued by saying that his brother had been attacked in 2021 but had survived.

Some of the perpetrators of the 2021 attack are still behind bars, but a verdict has not yet been rendered.

When the attackers were unable to enter my compound that day, they proceeded to smash every campaign flag I had erected throughout the neighborhood. The large box flag I had put up there was maliciously smashed by them when they visited the party secretariat in Ijede LCDA,” he stated.

As the political brickbat throwing continues between the Osun State chapters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over local government administration, residents have expressed concern over the way forward.

Trouble started on Monday, February 17, 2025, when six persons, according to official accounts from the Osun State Police Command, died as a result of an attempt by council officials under the All Progressives Congress (APC) to resume work at local government secretariats across the state.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, under Barrister Hashim Abioye, had fixed Saturday, February 22, 2025, for fresh local government elections in the state.

The Nigeria Police, in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, advised the state government against proceeding with the local government election.

The police cited security reports and legal implications, referring to the judgment of the Appeal Court sitting in Akure, which remained a subject of contention among the Osun APC, PDP, OSSIEC, and the state government.

Prior to the Nigeria Police’s warning, the state chapter of the APC formally announced its withdrawal from the elections.

A day before the election, an Osun State High Court sitting in Ilesa granted OSSIEC the authority to proceed with the local government polls.

Upon completion of the voting exercise on Saturday, OSSIEC announced that the Osun PDP won all 30 local government chairmanship positions and all 332 wards in the state. It then proceeded to issue Certificates of Return to the victorious chairmen and their deputies on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

On the same day, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke swore in the newly elected chairmen and their deputies.

Governor Adeleke also warned the newly sworn-in officials to steer clear of the local government secretariats to prevent any clashes.

However, reactions among Osun residents were divided.

While some praised the conduct of the elections, others raised concerns over logistical challenges and alleged malpractice.

Kemi Adeyemi, a trader from Osogbo, expressed satisfaction with the process.

“I was able to vote without any issues. The officials were organized, even without a security presence,” she said.

On the other hand, Adebayo Oladimeji, a teacher from Ilesa, voiced frustration over delays.

“We waited for hours before voting materials arrived at our polling unit. Many people got tired and left. This kind of inefficiency undermines the credibility of the election,” he remarked.

Political analysts have noted the impact of the state government’s involvement in the election, with some arguing that Governor Adeleke’s influence may have tilted the scales in favor of the PDP.

“When the ruling party controls the electoral body, there is always room for suspicion. The state government must work harder to build trust in the electoral process,” said Sola Akintunde, a political science student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Despite the controversies, some residents have called for unity and progress.

“What matters now is for those elected to focus on development. We need leaders who will address unemployment, education, and infrastructure,” said Funke Oladipo, a civil servant in Ede.

DAILY POST reported that OSSIEC Chairman Abioye had, during the election, raised the alarm that the commission’s office in Osogbo was sealed off by personnel of the Nigeria Police.

Abioye, in a statement later on Saturday, also alleged that OSSIEC’s inability to conduct polls in some polling units was due to the failure of polling materials to reach certain designated polling stations as a result of the harassment and arrests of OSSIEC officials by police personnel.

He, however, assured that alternative logistical arrangements had been made and that elections would commence in the affected polling stations.

The Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Atta, has cautioned the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr Umar Abdullahi Ganduje against any attempts to allow the current Chairman of the APC in Kano to continue in office for a fourth term.

The Minister was quoted to have warned that any attempt to gives the current Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Abbas another chance, would lead to serious crises in the party.

The Minister issued the threats at a caucus meeting in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano, on Saturday.

The Minister said, “we will not take it lightly with anybody trying to return Abdullahi Abbas to office after the expiration of his tenure, because it violates the constitution of the party”.

“We would not accept the Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas to be imposed on us for the fourth term, this will surely result in us decamping immediately from the party”, he threatened.

“We are saying loud and clear, I swear if Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance all of us will decamp from the party and APC will crash and lose 2027, this is my message to anybody who cares to listen”.

Yusuf Atta alleged that the arrogant and misguided disposition of Abdullahi Abbas as state Chairman is among the many negative tendencies that crippled and made the party to lost power in 2023.

“And up till today, the same person has not changed, therefore we are strongly warning that in any case and anyhow Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance everyone should consider the Party losing 2027.

” We were given good training by our parents and we know who God is, we never dare him but this man doesnt know that, therefore with him as Chairman APC is a foregone party in Kano.”

Atta said in 2023, APC won the governorship contest with Gawuna and Sule Garo as candidate and deputy but that Anti God remarks of Abdullahi Abbas truncated their victory.

There are reports that the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje is planning on reimposing Abdullahi Abbas to continue as the state chairman of the party for the fourth term.

Professor Adeagbo Moritiwon, a political scientist and long-time resident of Kwali, described Tampe as the frontrunner in the race, emphasising his strong reputation.

“Tampe is the man to beat. I always advise politicians to remember those who voted for them because they will need them again. I am yet to hear anyone speak ill of Tampe,” he noted.

Moritiwon further highlighted the candidate’s leadership style: “Politics in Nigeria has become synonymous with corruption, incompetence, and selfishness. But Tampe is determined to change this perception. His focus on service, moral integrity, and dedication to the people sets him apart.”

Tampe, who previously served as a councillor for Yangoji Ward, is widely recognised for his efforts to improve the lives of Kwali residents. With a solid educational background and experience working across different parts of the country, he is seen as a leader committed to development.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has won 16 out of the 18 chairmanship seats in the local government elections in Ondo State.

The Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, ODIEC, Joseph Aeemo, made this declaration at the headquarters of the commission in Akure on Sunday.

Aeemo said while the rescheduled election is being held in Ondo West LGA, results are being expected from Owo LGA.

DAILY POST gathered that only twelve political parties contested for the chairmanship and councillorship offices in the elections held on Saturday.

Before the poll, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, announced its decision to withdraw from the election, saying it does not believe in the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct a credible election.

The 12 political parties that contested in the election include: Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People’s Party, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Boot Party, and Labour Party.

Others include the National Rescue Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressive Party, and Zenith Labour Party.

Before the Saturday poll, the last council election in the state was conducted on August 23, 2020, with the tenure of the elected council officials elapsing on August 22, 2023.

Since then, the administration of the 18 council areas of the state has been managed by civil servants, specifically the Heads of Local Government Administrations.

However, after several postponements, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission finally fixed January 18, 2025, for the conduct of the election.
