Embattled Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has apologised to a former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, over her clash with the senator representing Ebonyi North, Onyekachi Nwaebonyi.

TheNigerian Online reports that Ezekwesili and Nwaebonyi clashed on Tuesday at the hearing of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions on a fresh petition from Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The Kogi lawmaker has repeatedly accused Akpabio of intimidating, maligning and sexually harassing her.

On Tuesday, Ezekwesili joined Abiola Akiode, counsel for Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the petitioner, Zubairu Yakubu, at the senate committee hearing as a witness in the case.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

Nwaebonyi, who appeared as a witness for Akpabio, repeatedly interrupted the former minister during the hearing.

Ezekwesili then asked the Senate Deputy Chief Whip to “compose himself and stop making noise” and said, “please, will you shut up?”.

Following the comments, Nwaebonyi lashed out at the former minister.

Responding, Nwaebonyi said, “You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here.”

Reacting to the clash in an X post on Wednesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan apologised to Ezekwesili over the insults hurled at her by the Imo lawmaker.

The Kogi senator also commended the former minister for her unwavering commitment to good governance, education and democracy.

She wrote, “Ma’am, I apologise for the insults. Know you took them for me… for us … as a mother and as a leader. Know that you are a true icon of integrity, courage, and visionary leadership.

“Your unwavering commitment to good governance, education and democracy continues to inspire generations.

“A champion of accountability… Nigerians appreciate you. I celebrate your brilliance, resilience and selfless service. You are a hero.”

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has defended her clash with the senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, at a Senate Committee hearing on Tuesday.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday, Ezekwesili stated that she is pleased with her verbal engagement with the Imo lawmaker, saying that the clash has exposed what women face in a patriarchal society.

She said, “I was very pleased with what happened yesterday because now it is in the public domain what women endure in many instances, and the rest of society may know a little about it but has not focused on it. It has now come to the top of our public agenda that we should not allow for a society that shuts down voices.”

The clash occurred during a Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions hearing on a fresh petition submitted by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

Ezekwesili was present at the hearing alongside Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, counsel to Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the chief petitioner from Kogi Central, Zubairu Yakubu.

Trouble started when the petitioner urged the Chairman of the Committee, Neda Imasuen, to step down in the case following the ‘controversial’ manner in which he had so far handled the alleged sexual harassment allegation against Akpabio.

He further alleged that some committee members had pre-existing ties to Akpabio, which he said compromised their ability to be neutral.

His remarks angered some lawmakers, who accused him of attempting to undermine the committee’s credibility.

Ezekwesili also came under fire for what they saw as her insistence on forcing herself into the proceedings.

However, Ezekwesili insisted on being heard out.

She said, “I asked to be put on oath as a witness. I am a citizen of Nigeria.”

This led to a heated argument with Nwaebonyi, who lashed out at her, saying, “You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here.”

Ezekwesili called him a “hooligan,” further escalating the altercation.

The verbal battle momentarily disrupted the hearing before order was restored.

During the proceedings, tensions flared when Nwaebonyi was heard hurling derogatory remarks at Ezekwesili, referring to her as an “insult to womanhood” and a “hooligan.”

There was a heated exchange between Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, senator representing Ebonyi North, and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, during a senate hearing on Tuesday.

The clash occurred at the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions hearing on a fresh petition submitted by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Trouble started when the petitioner urged the Chairman of the Committee, Neda Imasuen, to step down in the case following the ‘controversial’ manner in which he had so far handled the alleged sexual harassment allegation against Akpabio.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

“How can the chairman serve as a judge in a case where he has already publicly taken a position? What is the need for us to present our case when a verdict has already been given before hearing us?” Yakubu questioned.

After the tension was doused, the legislator representing Imo West, Senator Patrick Ndubueze appealed for calm before addressing the committee.

“We should stop behaving like people in the marketplace. This is the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is sad to hear you (petitioner) say you don’t have confidence in the Senate. What it means is that not everybody here is trustworthy.

“Yes, we are all citizens of this country. But here, you must be recognised before you speak. That is the rule. We cannot just jump to answer questions because you are a petitioner. This is a Standing Committee,” he said

However, Imasuen adjourned the hearing indefinitely following observations that both Akpabio’s wife and Akpoti-Uduaghan have a case in court and the absence of the Kogi lawmaker to defend her allegation.

Addressing journalists after the hearing, Ezekwesili described the Senate’s approach as a gross violation of the Nigerian Constitution and legal framework.

She criticised the committee’s insistence on prioritising Senate rules over constitutional provisions, particularly in cases involving disciplinary actions and petitions.

“The Nigerian Senate keeps telling citizens they are subject to Senate rules, even when those rules violate the Constitution. This is unacceptable in a democracy,” Ezekwesili stated.

She also referenced the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, arguing that it was carried out without due regard for constitutional provisions.

“The Senate placed its own rules above the laws of the land. Now, with this petitioner, they have done the same thing—using procedural loopholes to avoid addressing critical issues,” she said.

She added, “If a petitioner says they do not believe the Senate committee will give them a fair hearing due to clear bias, it is only just that an independent body reviews the matter.”

She also warned that the Senate’s actions could set a dangerous precedent where internal rules override the Constitution.

“The Senate must respect the Constitution. Otherwise, we risk turning our democracy into a system where powerful individuals manipulate processes to silence opposition and suppress justice,” she said.

Popular Nigerian activist, Omoyele Sowore has commended the former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili for not backing down when she clashed with Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi as captured in a viral video.

According to report Senator Nwebonyi, lawmaker representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District and Dr Oby Ezekwesili, had a heated verbal clash on Tuesday.

The confrontation occurred during an Ethics Committee hearing on sexual harassment allegations involving suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In an interview on Channels TV, Senator Nwebonyi explained that the altercation started when Ezekwesili tagged him as a hooligan and asked him to shut up.

Reacting, Sowore in a post on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, said Nwebonyi’s behaviour suggested that the upper legislative chamber is “clearly a waste of resources” and should be scrapped.

“Look at this individual’s behavior and explain to me why the Nigerian Senate should not be scrapped, as it is clearly a waste of resources to send unproductive representatives to a rubber stamp assembly.

“I commend Oby Ezekwesili for not backing down”, Sowore wrote.

Mrs. Ezekwesili reportedly claimed that the bad economic policies of Nigeria’s lawmakers were to blame for the nation’s economic woes.
In an interview with News Central, the former vice president of the World Bank’s African Region bemoaned the fact that political leaders do not consider the consequences of their policies before enacting them.

Ezekwesili, a specialist in economic policy, clarified that Nigerian political leaders prefer to spend their time preparing for the next election rather than enacting economic measures that will benefit the populace.
Listen, if up to 40% of our political leaders are familiar with the fundamentals of economics, I would be shocked. Some of the things we have witnessed in this nation would not have occurred if they had. People just scratch their heads and say, “Let’s do this,” when they encounter a predicament. It’ll function. No. What economic data supports the policy you have chosen? I looked at a few of our notable misses in the past.

People say things like, “We’re going to make sure that we address the petroleum subsidy problem,” for instance, when I see them. They don’t understand, however, that raising a product’s price in an industry that prevents the fundamental laws of supply and demand from operating without being hampered by various governmental blowbacks is just insane,” she described.

According to the former Minister of Solid Minerals, if authorities had permitted transparency in the oil and gas industry, Nigeria’s economy may have seen a radical transition.

The political elite has taken over the oil and gas industry, she said, and the majority of Nigerian officials view it as a cash cow. According to her, the same change that occurred in the telecoms sector needed to be applied to the oil and gas industry.

“So, you look at our nation’s petroleum and oil and gas industry. What do you observe transpiring? There is a political takeover of that area. If that sector is not viewed by the political elite as one that the leader wishes to keep near and dear, the opportunities in that sector will change drastically. She said, “It is preventing the creativity, ingenuity, and innovation that are possible in that sector where it is to go through a similar kind of thing as what the telecom sector went.”
