Confirming the arrest on Wednesday, a senior security source disclosed that the suspect was apprehended after a series of inciting posts surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, urging members of the armed forces to take control of the government.

The DSS said the suspect’s actions amounted to treasonable advocacy and were capable of destabilizing the country. The agency emphasized that freedom of expression must never be used as a tool to undermine the nation’s democratic institutions.

“Nigeria operates under a constitutional democracy. Any call for a military takeover is a direct violation of the law and will be treated as such,” a DSS spokesperson said.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect had been under surveillance for several days before being traced and arrested. Digital forensics reportedly linked the individual to multiple accounts spreading propaganda and calling for civil unrest.

The security agency revealed that while Nigerians are free to express dissatisfaction with governance, there are legal boundaries that citizens must respect. The DSS reiterated that it will continue to monitor online spaces to detect and neutralize threats before they escalate into acts of violence or subversion.

“Freedom of speech does not equate to freedom to incite treason or destabilize the nation. Citizens must exercise caution and responsibility when using social media platforms,” the statement added.

The arrest follows recent heightened tension across social media platforms where some users have been expressing anger over inflation, unemployment, and insecurity. However, authorities maintain that no level of frustration justifies a call for an unconstitutional change of government.

Security analysts believe the arrest is part of a broader effort by the DSS to curb online radicalization and maintain national stability amid rising political and economic pressures.

Meanwhile, human rights advocates have urged the government to handle the case within the limits of the law, stressing that citizens’ rights to free speech must be protected even as security agencies uphold national security.

The DSS confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and is cooperating with investigators. The agency added that upon conclusion of its investigations, the case will be referred to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) for possible prosecution under relevant sections of Nigeria’s Criminal and Cybercrime Acts.

The DSS also issued a stern warning to social media users nationwide, advising them to desist from spreading fake news or supporting any call that could be interpreted as a threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“The peace and unity of Nigeria are non-negotiable. Any individual or group caught promoting insurrection will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement concluded.

Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has once again become a trending topic across Nigeria’s political and social media landscape following the circulation of a quote allegedly attributed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. While the authenticity of the quote remains unverified, its viral spread underscores the enduring impact of Nnamdi Kanu on the national consciousness and the rising support for the Biafra movement.

The quote, which surfaced on Facebook in early April 2025, claimed that Obasanjo described Kanu as “the antidote to Nigeria’s many problems” and “a savior to nations.” Though no credible source confirms that the former president made such a statement, the message has fueled fresh debates about Kanu’s political relevance and the ongoing detention of the IPOB leader.

Despite being held in government custody since June 2021 on charges related to treason and terrorism, Kanu’s message of self-determination for the southeast continues to resonate widely. Many in the region—and across the Nigerian diaspora—view him not as a criminal, but as a freedom fighter and a powerful voice against systemic injustice.

Political analysts argue that the viral nature of the alleged Obasanjo quote—true or not—reflects growing frustration among Nigerians over perceived marginalization, insecurity, and government suppression of dissent. As disillusionment with the ruling APC government grows, the calls for national dialogue and regional autonomy gain more traction.

Supporters of the Biafran agitator believe that Kanu’s incarceration is symbolic of a deeper struggle for equality and recognition in Nigeria. “Even if Obasanjo never said those words, many people believe the sentiment is true,” one pro-Biafra advocate commented online. “Kanu speaks to our pain, and that’s why his influence hasn’t waned.”

The situation also highlights the growing use of digital platforms to amplify political voices and shape public opinion. While Obasanjo has not officially backed Kanu’s actions, his past criticism of governance failures under President Bola Tinubu has made him a figure closely watched by both critics and supporters of the federal government.

Kanu’s continued relevance—despite years of detention—shows that the Biafra cause remains alive in the minds of many Nigerians. His resilience is admired by supporters who say his sacrifice has rekindled a national conversation about democracy, justice, and identity.

With the 2027 elections approaching, issues like ethnic representation, freedom of expression, and government accountability will likely take center stage. Kanu’s legacy, whether through direct action or symbolic representation, is poised to shape political narratives for years to come.

As debates continue, one thing is clear: Nnamdi Kanu’s name still sparks emotion, loyalty, and defiance—and the movement he leads is far from forgotten.

The forum warned that his reckless and inflammatory statements could incite religious tensions and pose a threat to national peace and stability.

Describing Sowore’s comments as baseless, offensive, and deeply disrespectful, CCYF emphasized that respected pastors and bishops, who have made significant contributions to society, should not be subjected to unwarranted attacks.

Read Also: Lawmaker Moves to Regulate NASS Suspension Through Constitutional Amendment

CCYF, in a statement signed by its Convener, Adama Paul James, emphasized that labeling respected Fathers of Faith as failures, uneducated, or jobless is not only false but also a deliberate attempt to demean the contributions of these esteemed spiritual and intellectual figures.

The statement reads below:

“We, the Concerned Christian Youth Forum, have recently learned of the disrespectful and abusive comments made by Omoyele Sowore against Christian Leaders in general. This behavior is completely unacceptable

“To label our Fathers of Faith and Pastors as failures, uneducated, or jobless is preposterous, egregiously disrespectful, and therefore, unacceptable. The time has come to put an end to Sowore’s incessant attacks on the Christian Faith and her reputable leaders.

“It is a shame that he, Sowore has chosen to denigrate the accomplishments and contributions of some of the most revered Fathers of our Faith and Pastors in our country, each of whom has achieved remarkable success in their respective fields.
Bishop Francis Wale Oke, Pastor E.A Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor W.F Kumuyi, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Pastor D.K Olukoya, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, Dr Pastor Paul Enenche, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, Apostle Johnson Suleman, Pastor Poju Oyemade, Apostle Joshua Selman, and Pastor Jerry Eze, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, Pastor Godman Akinlabi, Pastor Emmanuel Iren, Pastor Korede Komaiya and many others that space will fail me to mention, all possess impressive academic achievements, not to talk of their years of service and devotion to their calling.

“Sowore should reflect on the fact that these individuals are not only spiritual leaders but also intellectual heavy weights who have earned the respect and admiration of millions of people around the world. Academically, Sowore is a dwarf where most of these men are standing. How can a sane man refer to a First Class graduate of mathematics or a professor of mathematics as uneducated?
“It is apparent that Sowore’s insults are not grounded in reality but rather in ignorance and hate. His insults are further confirmations that he is an uncouth, uncultured and unlearned man who is desperately seeking attention and relevance.
We urge him to rethink his approach and refrain from further attacks against Christianity and her leaders. The Concerned Christian Youth Forum will not stand idly by and watch our Faith and leaders disrespected and maligned by Sowore.

“This is to serve a strong note of warning to Omoyele Sowore and his ilk that any further attacks on Christianity or Christian leaders will be met with a stronger response. Sowore should be mindful of the fact that his miguided words and actions have far-reaching consequences, even capable of causing a breakdown of law and order. He should be held accountable for his reckless, rascally and ignoble role in inciting social and religious disturbance in a volatile society such as ours.

“We, the Concerned Christian Youth Forum, stand in solidarity with our Christian Leaders and our Faith. We will not tolerate any further attacks against them, and we will continue to defend their honor and integrity. We wish to draw the attention of the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the potential danger of Sowore’s rascality especially as it borders on religious sensitivity and the implications for national peace and security.”

A Christian preacher at Onitsha’s Ochanja Market was reportedly stopped by Governor Soludo because of noise pollution.
He told the preacher that it was against the law for him to openly preach in the marketplace and that he would be fined ₦500,000.
Furthermore, Barrister Ejiofor condemned the ₦500,000 fine imposed on those who disobeyed the ban.

An IPOB attorney stated in a statement on Monday

that the 1999 Constitution (as modified), 2023, Section 38 (1), guaranteed the right to freedom of religion.

Although he denied that such a regulation existed in Anambra State, he contended that the wider ramifications of such a prohibition would infringe upon Christians’ ability to propagate their faith.

It is possible that many people are unaware of the extent to which the State Governor’s clear prohibition has limited their religious freedom. The governor has referenced an unspecified “law” that, by that declaration, has made all public preaching activities unlawful, including outreach events and crusades that formerly took place outside of church facilities.

The governor should have talked about measures to regulate and limit these public sermons rather than imposing a total ban in order to stop the noise pollution he says is the reason for the ban.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo doesn’t seem to be able to handle the many serious and urgent issues facing our beloved State.
