Nine persons died, while 11 others were injured in a road crash that occurred along the Malumfashi-Kafur Road, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Sunday.

The Katsina State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Aliyu Ma’aji, who confirmed the incident, told our correspondent that the passengers were travelling in a Hummer Bus that was conveying 20 people while the vehicle was coming from Lagos to Katsina.

According to him, 11 persons were taken to the hospital.

Ma’aji noted that preliminary investigation revealed that the lone crash was caused by speeding, which led to the loss of control on the part of the driver.

Giving an update later in the day, the state FRSC Command Public Relations Officer, Shamsudeen Babajo, said out of the 11 persons taken to the hospital, three victims were referred to an orthopaedic clinic in the area for further treatment while seven others were discharged.

“Out of the 11 people who sustained injuries and were taken to the General Hospital Malumfashi, three were referred to the General Rimi Orthopaedic Hospital, Katsina, while the remaining seven were discharged,” the spokesperson said.

Two separate accidents that occurred on Sunday, the Eid-il-fitr day, in Ogijo, Ogun State and Maryland area of Lagos State, have left two people dead and 11 others injured.

TheNigerian Metro learnt in a telephone conversation with the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, that the Ogijo accident occurred around 6 am on Sunday.

According to Akinbiyi, the accident occurred when a truck had a tyre burst and collided with a Mazda passenger bus, killing one person and injuring 11.

Akinbiyi noted that the victims were rescued at a nearby hospital by emergency responders for medical attention.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

He said, “A fatal accident occurred at Five Star area in Ogijo at about 6:15hrs on Sunday. It involved a six-tyre truck with registration number GBE 243 XB and a Mazda bus with registration number KSF 542 YG.

“Thirteen people were involved in the accident including two persons in the truck and 11 persons in the Mazda bus. One person was recorded dead while 11 persons were injured.

“According to the truck driver, the accident was caused by his truck due to a sudden burst of his front right tyre that led the truck to lose control and hit a stationed 18-seater Mazda bus that was picking passengers from the rear.”

He concluded that the accident led to traffic build-up in the rear, but the situation was brought under control by the emergency responders comprising of TRACE, police and Federal Road Safety Corps officials.

In a similar accident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed that an accident involving two mini-buses along the Maryland axis left a pedestrian dead.

Taofiq noted that a mini-bus veered off the road due to speeding and rammed into another mini-bus and a pedestrian who was waiting to board a bus.

He said, “The fatal collision involved two Suzuki mini commercial buses (Korope) bearing registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG.

“Preliminary inquiries indicate that one of the vehicles, owing to reckless over-speeding, veered out of control and violently rammed into a stationary mini-bus before mercilessly mowing down the unsuspecting pedestrian.”

Taofiq noted that emergency responders ,including LASTMA officials and officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit “undertook the dignified evacuation of the deceased’s remains to the General Hospital, Ikeja.”

Reacting to the accident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, extended condolences to the deceased’s family.

Giwa who spoke through Taofiq, stressed the need for drivers to conduct routine maintenance of their vehicle to prevent avoidable crashes and loss of life.

“Ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility. Indiscriminate speeding and flagrant disregard for traffic laws constitute an existential threat to public safety. I implore all motorists to strictly operate within legal parameters to avert needless loss of human lives,” he stated.

A protest by women in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, turned violent on Tuesday when the joint forces of the Nigeria Army and police intervened, leaving at least three of the protesters battered with injuries.

The women had seized a community member, Israel Mgborogwu, accusing him of trading information about the farmers to suspected herdsmen.

They also alleged that Mgborogwu claimed on social media that herdsmen did not attack the community, which they said was false.

In video clips shared with our correspondent on Tuesday, the women who were seen parading Mgborogwu along major streets and town, accused him and the acting President General of Mgbuji Autonomous Community, Donatus Odoh, of selling Eha-Amufu land to unidentified persons and providing information to herdsmen on farmers who fell victim to killings.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

“He gave information about farmers to herdsmen on whoever went to farm who fell victim of the killing,” one of the women told our correspondent.

The President General of the community, Odo Donatus, reportedly escaped being held by the protesting women.

However, the protest turned violent when combined security agencies comprising soldiers, police and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed by the government to secure the release of Israel confronted the protesting women and teargassed them.

“In the chaotic scene, the policemen and soldiers who rolled armoured tanks during the protest injured several women with three badly battered,” Mrs Janet Ogenyi told our correspondent on the telephone.

The incident highlights the growing unrest in Eha-Amufu community, which has been plagued by insecurity and killings. While some community members allege high insecurity, others claim it is a false narrative.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls and messages.

The acting Deputy Director of 82 Division Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, also didn’t take his calls or respond to text message as at the time of filing this report.

A devastating fire engulfed a Hummer bus in Jigawa State on Saturday leaving four people burnt beyond recognition and 10 others injured.

The incident occurred around 4:00 pm near the Government Girls Unity Secondary School in Gwaram.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Police Command, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, in a statement in Dutse on Sunday, the bus was travelling from Zaki Local Government Area in Bauchi State to Rabadi village in Gwaram Local Government Area.

He said, “The vehicle was carrying 44 passengers, including 25 adults and 19 children.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started from the exhaust of the vehicle, which came into contact with a mattress tied at the back of the bus. The mattress ignited, spreading the flames quickly throughout the vehicle.”

According to him, four people lost their lives in the tragic incident: Zuwairah Hassan, 40; Fatima Hassan, five; Iyatale Hassan, three; and Halima Muhammad, 10. All the victims were from Saldiga village in Zaki Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

Adam also confirmed that 10 passengers were rushed to the Gwaram Cottage Hospital for treatment, while the remaining passengers were safely rescued. The corpses of the deceased were released to their relatives for burial after a doctor’s examination.

The Jigawa State Police Command urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to exercise caution on the roads.

It also cautioned drivers to avoid overloading, exceeding speed limits, and to regularly inspect their vehicles’ brakes and tyres before embarking on any journey.

“We urge all drivers to be mindful of the safety of their passengers and other road users.

“Overloading and reckless driving can have devastating consequences, as we have seen in this tragic incident,” Adam said.

The police are currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of the fire and to identify any potential negligence or wrongdoing.

The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed that four people were injured in a clash between herders and farmers in Agufa village, Miga Local Government Area of the state on Monday evening.

The recent clash has raised concerns about the growing tensions between herders and farmers in the state.

There had been previous cases of communal clashes between Hausa and Fulani groups in the state, resulting in loss of lives and property.

TheNigerian Metro gathered on Tuesday that the incident started as a dispute over alleged acts of disrupting some farms in the area attributed to some Fulani youths and quickly escalated into violence between farmers and herders on Monday evening.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

Confirming the incident via a telephone interview with our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Command, Shi’isu Lawan Adam, said many people were hospitalised as a result of the fight between the two warring groups.

However, Adam said that there was no confirmation of deaths in the incident yet.

“Four injured victims from both the herders and Fulani were rushed to the Jahun General Hospital for treatment, while many others with small injuries were treated and discharged from the hospital,” he said.

According to the PPRO, the police have already deployed tactical teams to the area to prevent further escalation of violence.

He therefore assured the public that engagements with community leaders and other stakeholders would commence immediately to foster peace and prevent a recurrence.

As the investigation continued, the PPRO promised that the police would do everything possible to ensure that justice was served, calling on authorities and residents to provide information that could help in the investigation.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with our correspondent said both groups engaged in an exchange of bows and arrows before security operatives intervened to restore order.

The eyewitnesses who spoke on the condition of anonymity described the scene as “chaotic, with many people injured and properties destroyed.”
