Hundreds of troops rescued the victims, who were mainly women and children, and had been kidnapped on March 3, 2026, it was reported.

The released victims have now sought refuge at Pulka Internally Displaced Persons camp. They said they survived their ordeal by the grace of god.

Zainab Ayuba, one of the rescued women who lost her husband, described her experience as horrible and inhuman.

“The experience is horrible and inhuman because I was really sexually molested while in captivity. According to Vanguard “I even prayed that my enemies should not fall victims of Boko Haram terrorists.”

Another victim, 75-year-old Idris Mustapha, said he was lucky to be treated differently from other captives because of his age.

“I thank God and our security agencies for securing our lives,” Mustapha said. I am one of the lucky ones, because I was not molested or treated badly by the terrorists, maybe it is because of my age.

“They fed me three times in a day and were at ease.”

Another rescued woman, who identified herself as Hauwa Yusuf, said she starved while in captivity.

She said she was usually given only one meal a day, mostly guinea corn, maize and powdered grains without soup.

Zulum Visits Pulka Camp
The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, visited Pulka on Monday and spoke with the victims who were rescued.

“In the latest operation, 357 persons were freed while about 82 others had been released in smaller batches since the abduction, the governor said.

The victims were abducted from Ngoshe, a border town in Gwoza Local Government Area, following an attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents earlier in the year.

Zulum commended President Bola Tinubu for his role in the efforts to restore peace and secure the release of the abducted residents.

“I want to say thank you very much on behalf of the government and people of Borno State and the Gwoza community in particular to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for all the efforts he has been making to ensure the return of peace and stability not only to Borno State but to the entire country,” Zulum said.

The governor also lauded the military, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies involved in the operation.

“I also want to seize this opportunity to commend the Nigerian Armed Forces, the office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Security and all other security outfits including our gallant Civilian JTF, Forest Guards, Vigilante and Hunters that have contributed immensely in the release of these abducted men, women and children,” Zulum added.

The latest release brought the total number of freed captives to 434, Zulum said.

“We are here to celebrate with the Ngoshe community after the release of 434 abducted women and children. What we saw this morning is about 360 which just came out two days ago. “But two to three weeks ago we also got about other persons, totalling about 434,” he said.

Back To Ngoshe Govt Plans
The governor said the state government had released funds for rehabilitation of the Ngoshe community.

Work in the community is almost complete and talks are underway with residents ready to return, he said.

“The government has released millions of naira for the rehabilitation of Ngoshe community. The work is almost complete. “We are also interfacing with the community on their return to Ngoshe. Those that are willing to return, we are working with the Nigerian military to make institutional arrangements that will ensure their safe and dignified return,” Zulum said.

He also oversaw the distribution of food and non-food relief materials to the rescued persons.

The freed victims are now undergoing medical and psychological support in a government facility, prior to their reintegration into their communities.

Earlier, it had reported that suspected kidnapper gunmen invaded the popular dredging site known as Capo in the early hours of Monday.

One of the soldiers protecting the people was killed and another shot and wounded, witnesses said.

A local hunter who was helping in the bush-combing exercise was killed in an exchange with the fleeing criminals, it was gathered.

The Assistant Director Army Public Relations 35 Artillery Brigade, Idereghi Akari, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, saying the troops in conjunction with the Nigerian Police responded to the distress call at a dredging site where expatriate workers were engaged in operations.

Akari said the attackers encountered a fierce exchange of fire in which one of the attackers was taken out, while the others reportedly fled the mission and withdrew through forest terrain surrounding the area towards the Ogun River.

The kidnappers took five hostages as human shields to prevent being followed by a Quick Response Force deployed as reinforcement, the statement said.

He said four of the hostages were killed by the fleeing attackers before they fled through the river channel in a boat with one hostage who escaped, who described how the assailants took the body of their dead colleague with them.

“The incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, when the joint security patrol was attacked by armed men, suspected kidnappers while responding to a distress call at a dredging site where the expatriate workers were engaged in operations,” the statement said in part.

A bitter gun battle ensued and one of the assailants was neutralized. The rest of the attackers were said to have abandoned their mission and fled into the nearby forest towards the Ogun River, taking five hostages as human shields to prevent being pursued by a Quick Response Force which came as reinforcement.

The fleeing attackers later killed the four hostages and then escaped by the river channel in a boat.”

The army also confirmed that one soldier was killed in the encounter and another soldier and two police officers were injured in the gunfight.

The deceased soldier and the four recovered bodies of victims have been deposited at the mortuary of the General Hospital, Sagamu, he said, adding that the injured personnel are receiving medical attention.

“Following the incident, the Quick Response Force and other security agencies have increased patrols and surveillance in the area to restore calm and stop further security breaches, the statement added.

Major Akari said the military was still committed to protecting lives and property and assured residents that operations in the Mowe axis would continue until the fleeing assailants are captured.

It was gathered that the victims were whisked away by a bandit kingpin named Jammo who is said to have control of Muntsira Forest in Maradun Local Government Area.

The Chairman of Maradun Local Government Area, Bello Dosara, confirmed the incident according to Daily Trust saying the victims went to meet the bandit leader without the approval or clearance of the government.

The state government, Dosara said, had always been opposed to any form of reconciliation with bandits, adding that Governor Dauda Lawal was not in support of such arrangements.

“We are against reconciliation with the bandits and Governor Dauda Lawal never supported that, but unknown to us the people chose to go on with it,” Dosara said.

Dosara stated that the bandit kingpin had previously blocked the village’s access to the market, but added that the council had been providing weekly security cover for residents to travel to the market and return safely.

He expressed concern that the residents still opted to approach the bandit leader despite the government’s opposition to negotiations with criminal groups.

“I wonder why, how they go and meet their rivals, they block access to the market and I support them with security every week,” he said.

The council chairman confirmed that 11 of the abducted persons had been released while 39 others were still being held.

“He released some to just brief the people on the unfortunate incident,” Dosara said.

Bello Husseini, the Councillor representing Magami/Faru ward, said the bandit leader had earlier requested reconciliation after one of his men was killed during a recent military operation at Kandare village.

He said the request was accepted by members of the affected communities themselves, despite the state government’s policy of no negotiation with bandits.

He said the communities sent a delegation of 50 men to meet the bandit leader but Jammo allegedly betrayed them and abducted the delegation.

Husseini said 11 members of the delegation were later released, while the other 39 remained in captivity.

He said the bandit leader was also demanding ₦24m for the release of three rifles, which the bandits were said to have carted away during previous confrontations.

Husseini said that Jammo and his men had an earlier confrontation with the Zamfara State security outfit, Askarawa, in which two of the bandit leader’s men were killed and their rifles seized.

The bandits later launched a reprisal attack during the last Ramadan period, killing two Askarawa personnel and taking away their rifles, he said.

“We are one to one, you see, they killed two of us and took their rifles and we also killed them and took possession of their firearms in the beginning,” Husseini said.

The latest reconciliation move was started by the bandit leader himself. “He said he was tired of banditry and wanted peace,” said the councillor.

“We are against any kind of reconciliation, because we know they are not trustworthy; they can tell one true thing against a hundred lies,” he said.

“The people he held hostage were elderly and he had no reason to hold them hostage; he betrayed them by saying he is tired of banditry and chose reconciliation,” Husseini added.

Officials Urge Military Action
Husseini who also said he relocated from his ward over insecurity, maintained that reconciliation with bandits would not resolve the security crisis in the area.

He and the council chairman called on the government and security agencies to carry out operations in Dajin Natsira, which they said was a major bandit enclave.

They said the area has not witnessed serious confrontation by security forces since the beginning of banditry in Zamfara State.

“They have never been attacked by any security forces and we are optimistic that if the government wants to help these people, one patrol five kilometres away from the village will give a very good positive result,” they said.

They said security operations in the forest would restore peace to several local government areas including Talata Mafara, Bakura, Anka, Gummi, Bukkuyum, Maru and Bungudu.

They said, “Whenever the forest is bombed, six out of the 14 local government areas in the state such as Talata Mafara, Bakura, Anka, Gummi, Bukkuyum, Maru and Bungudu will definitely be peaceful.”

The officials called on Governor Dauda Lawal and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to urgently intervene and rescue the remaining victims.

Jammo was the overall leader of Dajin Nritra, which Husseini said covers Bayan Ruwa, Kwargwaro, Aljumma Fulani, Gidan Dawa and Kyetare, although each area has its own local leader.

This was contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, during an interview with Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday.

The victims, Mrs Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, were seized on June 3 along Elewura, Ring Road, Ibadan, while she was taking them to school.

In a coordinated police operation, they were later rescued and two suspected kidnappers were killed while some accomplices were arrested.

Ayanlade said the rescue operation was carried out on the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and was coordinated by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police in collaboration with operatives of the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team.

He said one of the suspects popularly known as Ololu, had been on the command’s watch list before his arrest.

One of the perpetrators popularly known as Ololu by name has been on the command watch list. Operatives continued to follow him until he was arrested Thursday.

He said another suspect, identified as Dare, popularly called Solution, was arrested in Ibadan following Ololu’s arrest and interrogation.

‘Personal Assistant’s Insider Knowledge’
In May, one of the suspects allegedly approached a personal assistant associated with the family for information about the plot to kidnap them, the police spokesman said.

He mentioned the aide, Shehu.

“One of those picked was the one that was with the family who happened to be a personal assistant by name Shehu,” Ayanlade said.

“Daddy approached him first to give them inside information of how the family lives, their lifestyle, their routine and all of that.

The suspects had profiled the victims’ movements and had originally planned to abduct the mother of the family, he said.

The kidnappers later changed their plan after they found out that a driver usually took the children to school, Ayanlade said.

Eventually the gang hit on the day Mrs John-Paul drove the children herself, he said.

“Our first plan was to abduct the mother,” Ayanlade told the BBC. But they realized it was the driver who normally takes them to school and changed their mind to go for the kids.

Too bad for them. That day it was the mother who took them to school, and they got to work.

The police spokesman said the victims were traced to a hideout at Ayegbule, Ibadan on June 6 around 7.30pm.

“One of the gang members, who was identified as Kelechi, allegedly travelled from Lagos to participate in the operation and opened fire on police operatives.”

“The operatives returned fire and neutralised him and another suspect who was providing cover fire,’’ Ayanlade said.

“They opened fire on the operatives. Then the operatives professionally and with tactical precision neutralised him and the second who was also there to give a covering fire for him,” he said.

“They recovered weapons and rescued the victims unscathed,” he said.

Asked whether the kidnapping was politically motivated or for ransom, Ayanlade said: “The investigation is still on-going.

Police would not prejudge the outcome of the investigation, he said.

“I don’t want to get ahead of the investigation,” he said. The investigation is ongoing. The suspects have been taken into custody by police. They are under investigation.

“We still tracking the rest of them that got away. “We knew that four of them were in the vehicle on the day this incident happened. “But these were six in number who did this.”

The police spokesman said the command would get to the root of the matter and arrest all those involved in the abduction

“Whoever is sponsoring them, whoever is responsible, whatever connections they have, whoever is involved in this, they all will be arrested and they will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

The schools attacked are in Esinele, Yawota and Alawusa communities, where gunmen struck on May 15 and took away students and teachers, reports said.

The gunmen have reportedly made four main demands. They demand the release of two terrorist leaders in detention, payment of ransom, provision of two Hilux vehicles, and the acceptance of Sharia-related law.

The two men they are demanding are Mahmud Usman (Abu Bara’a or Abbas Mukhtar) and his deputy Abubakar Abba (Isah Adam, Mahmud Al-Nigeri or Mallam Mamuda).

Both are linked to Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fii Bilaadis Sudan, or Ansaru, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram.

The group has been linked to a string of violent attacks in Nigeria, including the Kuje prison raid in 2022.

Security records show the suspects were arrested between May and July 2025 and are presently on trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Usman has already been convicted of a separate charge of illegal mining after admitting it was used to fund weapons for kidnapping and attacks.

He remains in custody of the Department of State Services while other charges are pending. His deputy has pleaded not guilty to a number of charges and is still on trial.

“They are also demanding for about ₦1bn to be sent to an account in the Republic of Benin.”

It is said that the attackers, about eight of them, stormed the neighbourhood popularly called “Back of Catholic Church” shortly after midnight.

It was learnt that the hoodlums shot and killed a security guard, identified as Shuaibu Yerima, who was on duty to secure the zone.

The gunmen also abducted Pastor Francis Oriade of the All Christian Fellowship Mission, Maitama, Abuja, Jewel Obeh, Friday Isaac and an 11-year-old boy, Delight Okeke.

The incident came a week after bandits raided nearby Kungabokun community and kidnapped a resident on Sunday, raising fears among residents of the area.

Speaking with Daily Trust on the attack, Emmanuel Isaac, a younger brother of one of the abducted victims, said he was the first to notice the arrival of the gunmen after hearing a gunshot which was believed to have killed the local security guard.

He said that the attackers had later entered their compound, some of them with guns and another member of the gang was apparently the leader.

Then we saw them come into our compound, about four of them, carrying guns. Another member of the gang, who appeared to be in charge, had a mask on his face. We tried to go out the back door but they rounded us up and told us to go back in the house,” he said.

Isaac said the gunmen tied their hands and that of his elder brother before deciding who to take away.

They bound my hands and my elder brother’s hands and told me to go with them. But my brother begged them to go with him instead, and they agreed,” he added.

Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the kidnappers left,” he said.

“About 10 minutes after they left, the police came to the neighbourhood in an armoured van and a Sienna.

“We pleaded the police to pursue the kidnappers, pointing to the direction they took but they said no, that they preferred to go through a different direction,” Isaac said.

Sister Claims Pastor Was Taken Out of Room
Elizabeth Oriade, the younger sister of the abducted pastor also said the gunmen gained entrance into the house through a window after they failed to break the door.

The family heard gunfire around midnight and only then learned of the attack, she said. The gunmen entered the family’s home about 20 minutes later.

“We saw their presence after some gun shooting around 12am and they invaded our houses around 20 minutes after,” she said.

The attackers followed them to the toilet, then dragged the pastor out of his room, she told CNN.

“They pursued us to the toilet, dragged the pastor out of his room, beating him in the process as he made them suffer much for not opening the door of his room immediately, according to them.

“They cut one of our wrappers and tied our hands with it, took our mobile phones and also took some cash before taking him away,” she narrated.

Mrs Joy Alex, whose husband Jewel Obeh was among those abducted, said the gunmen raided their house shortly after the family returned from their shop.

She said she looked for the house key for more than an hour before she went home with her husband and daughter.

“On that ill-fated night, I was still at the family shop beside the roadside in our neighbourhood till about 11pm looking for the house key for over an hour. So I told my husband to go and check into a hotel until my daughter found the key,” she said.

She said the attackers arrived about an hour after they got home.

“We heard the gunmen were coming about an hour after I got back home. They pulled a window with digger like tools that was attached to the house.

“Two of them jumped in and said ‘Open our door. She said: “First they wanted to take my daughter away, then they decided to leave with my husband alone.”

11-year-old abducted as mother begs
The mother of the abducted 11-year-old boy, Erenta Okeke, said the gunmen entered her house through a window and demanded money, with a gun pointed at her head.

When the attackers stormed the house, the woman said her husband was not at home.

“My husband was not around at the time, so they decided to abduct my little son after begging with them to spare his younger sister who was shivering throughout the period of the operation,” she narrated.

The attack has left the community in fear with many crying out for urgent security intervention to avoid further attacks in the area.

The residents said the vigilante was shot first in the leg but bled to death while waiting for medical help.

The chief of Ijayapi, also in the Byazhin community, was buried on Thursday after funeral prayers held at his palace.

Contacted by the media platform, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, promised to investigate the incident and revert but had not done so as of the time of filing this report.

A reporter who arrived in the area saw officers at the Byazhin Police Division holding a meeting with some members of the affected community.

The incident was confirmed by a senior police officer at the Byazhin Divisional Headquarters who spoke on condition of anonymity and said operatives were already on the trail of the kidnappers.

Baba-Ahmed was reported to have warned that the President’s handling of the security crisis could lead to public rejection if urgent action is not taken.

He said this on Thursday during an interview on Arise News.

“The security situation in Nigeria is deteriorating fast with violent attacks and kidnappings pervading all over the country,” the PRP leader said.

“President Tinubu has no grip on escalating violence every part of Nigeria is now vulnerable to insecurity. In a civilised democracy, President Tinubu’s record on insecurity would have cost him his seat long ago,” he said.

The kidnapping of children showed how deep the crisis was, he said.

“Every inch of Nigeria is now vulnerable to insecurity. Every time children from generals to toddlers are stolen. Children, toddlers in school have been kidnapped.”

Baba-Ahmed said the government had not faced up to the reality of growing violence. He said the insecurity crisis appeared normal to Tinubu and his inner circle.

He said, “Everything that should have been said by the media, by civil society, by everybody, except of course the National Assembly, Tinubu himself and his little circle of supporters, seem to believe that this is a problem that we can live with.

The PRP leader said the government had failed in its basic responsibility of protecting lives and property.

Now, President Tinubu has spectacularly failed to protect anybody. “Again, like I said, every part of Nigeria is now vulnerable,” he said.

He warned the country could suffer more attacks unless urgent action was taken.

“We are in trouble,” Baba-Ahmed said. “We have not been safe under him and it is likely that we will be more exposed to criminality between now and the elections.”

Baba-Ahmed said the PRP’s demand for the resignation of Tinubu was not political but because of the worsening state of national security.

“We said everything else. And we mean that in all seriousness. “He said President Tinubu should step down.

He said the status quo would be rejected by Nigerians if the President remained.

“If we project what he’s doing, how he’s performing between now and the elections, we don’t even need to wait,” the PRP Leader said. Nigerians will not have him.” »

“Insecurity has become a defining national crisis that can no longer be excused,” Baba-Ahmed said.

“Anything more?” he asked. What more can one say to President Tinubu and Nigerians?

“I heard your programme. You were talking about the increase in these kidnappings and violent crimes all over the country.”

He also threatened to expose the names and identity of such politicians if they do not stop their criminal activities.

Igboho made the claim and submission on Wednesday when he received the new executive members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) led by Akinteye Bàbàtunde at his home in Soka area of Ibadan.

The activist, speaking in a video that has since gone viral on the internet, said he can fight the bandits himself but all his efforts so far have not been approved by the state government.

He also denied collecting money from the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde to rescue the victims who were recently kidnapped from schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State by terrorists.

Igboho also alleged that the masterminds of the kidnappers are trying to make the country ungovernable for President Bola Tinubu as it was in the time of Goodluck Jonathan.

‘If I am allowed to burst into the hideouts, they will flee. They’re not mannequins, they’re not gnomes, they’re human beings, and so they could be moved. I know the politicians behind them, if they do not stop their evil acts I will mention them all. I know ’em. It is the politicians who put them up who are giving them the ammunition and the money.

The same thing they did to Jonathan, they are doing to Tinubu. They want to make the country ungovernable to him. They even have fake news propaganda to scare the masses and distract supporters from the President. Let us say the recent abduction is not a game. They abducted children in Oyo. I volunteered to go. But the state government said ‘No.’”

“Later they (Oyo government) told me that the kidnappers said if I try to force myself to come and rescue the children, they will kill them all. “If they really mean rescue of the victims, they should instruct my boys and I to chase them out of the forests in our regions and see whether those people will stay there even with their bombs and sophisticated weapons,” he said.

The Oyo-based activist also claimed that he has gotten approval from the Federal Government for his security network, named “Iru Ekun”, but the Oyo State Government warned him from operating and that any attempt by him to rescue the children might lead to their death.

“After I put in place ‘Iru Ekun’ security network, the federal government gave me the nod but the state government said no security must take a step behind them. Do we have to wait until he floods the forests to save these kids? I’m just worried about those abductees, nobody can abduct me, not even my family because they are scattered across Canada and Germany. Worried about what?

Despite his bad administration, Buhari completed his tenure. Why are they trying to stop a Yoruba man Tinubu from completing his? It was Tinubu who saved me from exile. Why should I fight him? And why do they want to destroy his government? Igboho asked.

It was noted that terrorists, on May 15, abducted no fewer than 46 pupils and teachers in an attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The attacked schools are Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, Esiele and L.A. Primary School.

The former minister’s media aide, Femi Awogboro, disclosed this in a statement.

Adelabu was said to be an All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for the 2027 governorship race.

The statement noted that Adelabu’s sister, Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, along with her twin sons, Peter and Paul, were abducted in the early hours of Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

The tragic incident happened as John-Paul was on her way to drop her children at school.

“The family of Chief Adebayo Adelabu, former Minister of Power and leading gubernatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Congress APC) in Oyo State wishes to formally confirm the unfortunate kidnapping of his younger sister, Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her twin sons, Peter and Paul, in the early hours of Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

Mrs. John-Paul, 43, was allegedly abducted by some gunmen at about 7:30 a.m. while on her way to take her children to school in Ibadan. The abductors also took her 12-year-old twin sons who were with her during the incident.

Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul is the youngest of the five children of Mrs. Olufunmilayo Aduke Adegoke Adelabu. She had served meritoriously at Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Pension Custodian until her voluntary retirement last year. On retirement, she relocated to Ibadan with her children, making arrangements to join her husband, Mr. John Paul, who relocated to the United States of America before her.

“As soon as the incident was reported, all relevant security and law enforcement agencies were duly contacted. We are pleased to confirm that security operatives have swung into action and preliminary investigations have begun in earnest. Efforts are underway to safely rescue the victims and arrest those responsible for this heinous crime.

“Chief Adebayo Adelabu and the entire family are very distressed by this tragic development but remain hopeful and confident in the capacity of the security agencies to secure the safe release of Mrs. John-Paul and her children.

“The family respectfully asks everyone to stay calm, not to speculate and not to circulate unconfirmed information that could compromise ongoing security operations. We also appeal to well-meaning Nigerians for prayers and support during this difficult period.

“We also call on members of the public who may have relevant information that could assist security agencies in their investigation to report such information through the appropriate channels without delay.

The family will continue to work closely with the security authorities and will issue further updates as events unfold.
