In the video, officials from the ministry’s monitoring and compliance unit were seen asking the resident to seek approval and pay a fee before proceeding to install the pipeline.

But in response, the state government has said that permits and administrative fees for solar power installations apply only to residents of its social housing estates, not to private homeowners or tenants across the state.

People are angry, but it’s a complicated anger. Some are very angry that instead of the government appreciating the citizens for standing in the gap, it is going after the people with taxes.

But others cautioned that such requirements might hinder the adoption of renewable energy in a country plagued by ongoing power outages. Advocates on this side of the argument argue that the state government just wants to see its citizens in darkness and depression.

Reacting in an X post, Wale Ajetunmobi, senior special assistant on media to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the policy was misunderstood by the resident.

“Not all residents are charged for solar installation by the state,” he said.

“This development is true, but the man who made the video appears to be misinformed about the Lagos State Government’s guidelines for installing solar energy systems in social housing estates,” he said.

Only residents of government-owned social housing estates are charged administrative fees for alterations, including the installation of solar power systems, he said.

Ajetunmobi said the requirement is tied to the government’s duty as facility manager of the estates, saying solar installations are treated as structural alterations, especially when they impact shared spaces or the original design of buildings.

“Only residents who own property on government-owned social housing estates are required to pay administrative fees for modifications such as the installation of a solar power system before any further development can be approved,” he said.

“Any alteration must be processed by the ministry of housing’s physical planning and survey departments for approval, material compliance and post-inspection checks.

“Those solar power systems are usually installed by the occupants in shared areas; so this change has to be approved by the facility manager (government) before any occupant can go ahead.”

The person in the video is likely a tenant who rented one of the government-owned estates from the property owner and does not fully understand the terms of the indemnity document, he added.

He said the officials seen in the video were from the ministry’s monitoring and compliance unit, adding that the resident did not seek prior approval before installation commencement.

He said the government had previously taken care of liabilities from unapproved modifications, including roof damage and fire incidents.

“He is probably a tenant in one of these social housing estates owned by the Lagos state government, otherwise he would not have raised concerns about something that was clearly documented in the indemnity document which he signed before the government handed him the apartment after he bought it.

“The general rule is that anybody living in an estate should approach the state government (facility manager) for permission before making any external changes.”

He said unapproved changes affecting shared property could leave the government liable for liabilities with other residents.

According to the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, any structural changes made to buildings must be approved by the appropriate

authorities.

But what started as a government regulation over the installation of solar panels in the state-owned estates has spun into a heated public debate over governance, taxation, housing failure and the limits of state control in a city struggling with worsening economic hardship.

Residents, aside from condemning the government’s action, are calling for the scrapping of such a law as they view as commercialization of survival

For many Lagosians, the matter is more than about solar energy, but another layer in what they call a growing system of levies, approvals and charges placed on citizens who are already compelled to provide basic amenities for themselves.

Some quarters believe that while governments of developed societies subsidise the adoption of renewable energy, Lagosians are being asked to pay for the additional fees just to escape darkness.

Even the government clarification failed to assuage the people’s anger as tempers ran high in the entire state with many poised to take on the government authorities.

But many residents insist the policy is only a “pilot phase” that could eventually be applied to private estates and everyday homeowners across the state. So, their thinking is if they don’t react now, it would be too late when the government would want to extend it to private house owners.

There is concern in some quarters as to why citizens who already provide their own electricity, water and security, would be required to pay the government to install solar systems powered by sunlight; a natural gift to humanity.

A businessman living in one of the private estates in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos, Anthony Osewele, lambasted the state government, saying, “The state government has no right to sell God’s energy.”

“When people decide to assume the position of God to themselves, you wonder whether they still had any iota of conscience in them.

” “It is not the right of anybody to sell the God-given energy of the sun. We are talking about solar energy that is from the Sun; God free gift to mankind. The sun is the center of universe . So, for me, it is evil and the height of wickedness for any one in authority to even think of collecting money from citizens for using sunlight. This means one day they will figure out a way to charge citizens for breathing the air. This is condemnable in all forms.

“We are talking about other climes where the government provides electricity to their citizens 24 hours nonstop. But here the government provides darkness making life hellish and short for the people.

And when the people move to provide alternatives just to better their lives, the government is here to add to their sorrow by taxing them for doing that. “(This) is very bad,” he said.

Also, supporting Osewele’s position is a lawyer, Marcellus Onah, who stressed that residents are not adopting solar power as a luxury, but as a necessity forced on them by the collapse of public electricity supply.

“People are going for solar because the government has failed to provide stable electricity which is the minimum any responsible government should provide.

“We generate our own water. We produce our own power. We repair the roads around us. All of these and the government still wants to charge us for trying to survive. “It is very bad and unacceptable,” he said.

Rowland Adebayo, an estate agent, also lamented that Lagosians are being strangulated by multiple taxes and levies without commensurate public services.

They have issued parking tickets on the road. They’re asking for tenement rates. Every day there’s a new levy or another.

“I don’t mind paying taxes if the government is doing right things.

“But forcing people to pay to have solar energy is criminal. It is like taxing sunlight which is a free gift from God and we must resist it,” he said.

The airline announced the development in a statement on Friday by its spokesman Osifo-Whiskey Efe, saying the aircraft was immediately grounded for safety inspections after the incident.

When the plane touched down, engineers carried out initial checks and found the landing gear needed further checks, the airline said.

“Initial checks indicated the need for further checks of the landing gear and, as a result, the aircraft was grounded in accordance with normal aviation safety procedures,” the statement said.

As the development, Air Peace announced the cancellation of the scheduled return flight of the aircraft from Osubi to Lagos.

The carrier said that arrangements were in place to mitigate the impact on affected passengers which included hotel accommodation in Osubi while they finalize their travel plans.

Air Peace regretted the disruption and apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the cancellation.

The airline reconfirmed its dedication to the safety of its passengers stating that operational choices are consistently based on the stringent compliance of safety regulations and industry standards.

“At Air Peace, safety remains our number one priority,” the airline said.

“While these types of disruptions are unfortunate, all operational decisions we make are through the lens of our uncompromising commitment to the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.”

The airline also thanked passengers for their patience, understanding and cooperation and assured that further information will be provided as developments unfold.

Reports said the protesters, largely women, blocked the entrance to the office of the electricity distribution company and demanded immediate restoration of power supply to the area.

Residents say the blackout has lasted for several weeks, impacting economic activities, households and increasing the financial burden on residents who now depend heavily on alternative power sources.

Some community members said that the company didn’t provide enough information about the cause of the outage or when power would come back on.

The demonstrators also said they organised the protest after little action was taken on several complaints made to the company.

The residents, some of whom were holding placards and singing solidarity songs, appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene and ensure a permanent solution to the electricity crisis in the community.

Reacting to the protest, the officials of Ikeja Electric appealed to residents to remain calm saying the outage was due to technical issues.

The company reassured the community that work is on-going to correct the fault to restore stable power supply to the affected areas.

The protest is a sign of rising anger among residents in parts of Lagos over persistent problems with electricity supply and the economic impact of long blackouts on homes and businesses.

She told Channels Television that the problems started after the birth of her son, Liam.

“Yeah, we were best of friends. So I think we fell out, I think it was after I had my child,” she added.

She said that arguments over the naming ceremony for Liam and other unresolved family issues grew worse over time.

“It was after I had Liam, because of the naming ceremony issues, and because my husband forgave his mother. It was just a family feud that turned into something very big.

“Everyone online seems to think it’s all about my husband’s downfall. But in actual fact it is on account of the family feud that we had before the demise of my husband,” she said.

The late singer’s widow further claimed that just after Mohbad’s death, her father-in-law centered conversations on the singer’s properties and royalties.

“I literally picked up the phone and called him because I was tense and scared. He wasn’t telling me what I needed to hear. He was just talking about my husband’s property and all that,” she said

She also alleged that Joseph Aloba wants the DNA outcome to disprove Liam’s paternity.

What he really wants will never happen. He actually wants my child to be DNA negative,” she said.

Omowunmi added that the situation has reached the point where reconciliation may no longer be possible.

Balarabe Rufai, the party’s National Youth Leader, posted this on 𝕏 on Monday, along with flyers for “Operation Occupy INEC.”

He said that the Lagos protest would start at 8 a.m. at Yaba College of Technology and the Ogun protest would start at 11 a.m. at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited office in Abeokuta.

At the time this report was written, it was not clear if the protest had started at the INEC office in Lagos.

Rufai said that the protests were meant to demand accountability and respect for the law.

He said, “The Lagos ADC Youth Wing has taken a strong and peaceful stand by taking over INEC to send a clear message: the law must be followed, due process must be followed, Amupitan must step down right away, and the leadership led by Senator David Mark must be restored right away.

“This is a call for responsibility, not disorder.”

The youth leader made it clear that the protest was a reaction to what they saw as unfairness.

“When institutions don’t act fairly, it’s the duty of citizens to respond with courage and clarity. “The demand is simple: restore integrity or step aside,” Rufai said.

The planned protests come after a protest in Abuja on April 8 by important opposition leaders, such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ADC National Chairman David Mark, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye were also at the protest in Abuja.

The protests are connected to INEC’s decision on April 1 to stop recognizing factions within the ADC. This came after a Court of Appeal ruling told the parties to keep things the way they are in the leadership dispute.

People who support the ADC have accused the election body of being biased and are calling for the resignation of Joash Amupitan, the chairman of INEC.

During a symbolic event on Sunday at the De Blue Roof Event Center in Agidingbi and other parts of Lagos, the food bags were given to various groups and individuals throughout Lagos State.

Top government officials, including Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner of Information and Strategy, and Dr. Tajudeen Afolabi, the Special Advisor for Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement, attended the event. To commemorate President Bola Tinubu’s 74th birthday, a large number of women, young people, heads of various organizations, and political and community leaders participated.

Additionally, the food boxes were given out to Muslims and Christians at the Central Mosque and Chapel of Christ the Light in Alausa. Additionally, thousands of Lagos residents were given access to it at various locations throughout the State’s twenty Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

In an Open Letter to Lagos citizens read at the delivery of the gifts, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged all Lagos State citizens to join him in honoring President Tinubu’s life and outstanding accomplishments, calling him a “remarkable leader.”

Mr. Segun Fayemi, the CDC Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, read an open letter wishing President Tinubu many more years to achieve greater glory for himself and our dear country, Nigeria.

“My dear people, as you receive this gift box, know that its contents are more than a token of celebration,” he stated. “We stand with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” says the unified voice of Lagos State. His Renewed Hope Agenda is something we support. The Nigeria he is constructing has our faith. Indeed, we have faith!

Together, we have withstood the hardships of the reforms, and now we are starting to enjoy the benefits of our perseverance. We’ve passed the worst and are looking forward to the best. Let’s approach 2027 with excitement, conviction, and confidence.

“President Tinubu’s transformation must not be stopped in its tracks. The seeds planted with such courage, boldness and foresight are only just beginning to bear fruit.

“I invite all Lagosians, including traders in Balogun, tech entrepreneurs in Yaba, farmers in Epe, fishermen in Badagry, bankers on the island, teachers in Ikorodu, mothers in Alimosho, fathers in Mushin, and students in Surulere, to join me in honoring our beloved President and reaffirming our dedication to the journey of national rebirth he has so bravely undertaken.

“May the Almighty provide His Excellency many more years of exceptional health, fortitude, discernment, and unending grace to continue guiding our wonderful country to its fated glory. I hope he gets the same happiness on his birthday that his leadership has given millions of Nigerians, who now dare to think that a better, wealthier, and more cohesive Nigeria is developing right in front of our eyes.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended President Tinubu’s contribution to the growth and development of Lagos State during his tenure as the first Governor of Lagos State in the present Fourth Republic.

“As your governor, I have had the privilege of building upon the legacy President Tinubu created as Lagos State’s governor from 1999 to 2007,” he declared. With a GDP of roughly $259 billion, Lagos is currently Africa’s second-largest metropolis economy thanks to his innovative leadership.

The Greater Lagos Rising Agenda is based on the institutions he established, the revenue architecture he invented, and the culture of excellence he fostered. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s untiring hands and fertile mind developed Lagos as it is today.

They alleged that Nigerian airline Air Peace and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration had promised direct flights, leaving them stuck and in financial hardship.

The irate Nigerians told Sahara Reporters that the widely reported Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian government and Brazil in August 2025 raised high expectations among the Nigerian community in South America, especially regarding the promise of an Air Peace-operated direct flight from Lagos to São Paulo.

But nothing has happened several months after the deal was hailed by public officials and extensively reported in the media.

The aforementioned journal was informed by a Nigerian living in Brazil that the entire arrangement was dishonest from the start.

“The Memorandum of Understanding that the Tinubu administration signed with Brazil in August is a huge hoax, and they just gave us Nigerians who live there false optimism. Everything was a lie.

Specifically, the fact that Air Peace operates direct flights from Lagos to Sao Paulo. Nigerians were paying up to $1,500 to travel from Nigeria to Brazil before they arrived to trick us. The lack of a direct flight was the reason for this. Every time we travel to Brazil, we pass through Europe, South Africa, and Addis Ababa.

When he brought his flight that time, the Air Peace Chairman offered us false optimism. The Nigerian resident in Brazil stated, “He promised us that the flight would start properly in November 2025 and he would reduce the flight price by 50% because it is a direct flight of about 6 to 7 hours.”

The source claims that guarantees from the airline and government officials caused many Nigerians in Brazil to put off their travel plans, while others started getting ready for business visits to Nigeria because they thought cheaper, faster direct flights would soon be available.

Many of us trusted them, which prompted us to schedule our travels in advance. We believed the government was telling the truth since we do a lot of business in Nigeria,” the person stated.

Instead, neither Air Peace nor the Nigerian government have offered a flight, an official statement, or an explanation months after the November 2025 timeline was promised.

We’re stuck now. February is almost here, and Air Peace has done nothing. It is not communicated. The source continued, “Many kids are stuck here with no official reaction from Air Peace or the government.

Nigerians living in Brazil, particularly students and small business owners who had planned their affairs around the expected direct path, claim that the situation has severely strained their finances and emotions.

Some revealed that they rejected other travel options in anticipation of the promised cheaper direct flight, only to discover that they couldn’t afford the current, expensive connecting flights.

The Nigerian government has already carried out similar actions. I’ve spent more than thirty years in Brazil. Every government arrives with the delusion of providing us with direct flights to Nigeria. However, the government’s excessive celebration of this victory is what made Tinubu’s administration so concerning, according to another source.

According to reports, the demonstrators had assembled at the assembly building to call for a halt to home demolition and forced evictions in communities throughout the state.

However, the police’s use of tear gas caused panic in the neighborhood, causing demonstrators, locals, vendors, and commuters to escape in various directions in order to avoid being impacted.

Movement around the facility was hampered by the situation as demonstrators fled for their lives amid the mayhem.

The demonstration had temporarily dispersed, but security personnel remained on the area.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, or LASEMA, said in a statement that the aircraft experienced a malfunction while in Nigerian airspace, requiring an emergency landing.

LASEMA stated that it got a distress call using its toll-free emergency lines, 767/112. The aircraft was in distress, as confirmed by the LASEMA Response Team, LRT, when they arrived on the scene.

At Murtala Mohammed International Airport, the pilot successfully landed on the runway while the LASEMA Response Team and other emergency personnel were on high alert.

The multi-agency responders’ cooperative efforts were coordinated. The aircraft was transported to the apron for thorough inspection and timely repairs following a thorough inspection by the pilot and the engineering team.

“No injuries or fatalities were reported; all passengers of the distressed aircraft were safely evacuated,” the statement stated.

The agency stated that there was no significant damage to the aircraft despite the technical problem and the emergency landing.

“On the apron, the aircraft has been secured. The statement also stated, “Recovery activities have been concluded.

Party power brokers are reportedly attempting to postpone Seyi Tinubu’s bid for governor till 2031.

With a number of well-known candidates, new power blocs, and an increasingly vocal electorate weighing in on the state’s future leadership, the race is expected to be among the most competitive in recent memory.

Many youth and expatriate organizations are promoting Seyi, 40, the son of President Bola Tinubu, as a possible candidate for the governorship of Lagos State.

He was encouraged to declare his interest in the race last year by groups including The Future Platform, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, and several Nigerian communities living abroad.

According to reports, the development put the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in a difficult position because Seyi hasn’t made his intention public or gotten his father’s support.

It is anticipated that Lagos State would have a new governor by 2027 since Babajide Sanwo-Olu will be serving out his second term, which is authorized under the constitution.

In order to make room for Seyi Tinubu in 2031, there are rumors that the state’s influential people are thinking of having Ambode return and finish his second term.

Before the 2019 election, Ambode had a falling out with Tinubu and the leaders of the Lagos APC. As a result, Ambode was denied the APC ticket and lost the party’s primary to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who went on to win the governorship vote.

According to sources, the GAC members are currently attempting to postpone Seyi Tinubu’s bid for governor until 2031, citing the necessity of party continuity and strategic planning.

Seyi Tinubu was encouraged to maintain a low profile in order to focus on his father’s pursuit for a second term, despite his initial enthusiasm in the gubernatorial contest, the source told our correspondent.

“Given the growing opposition to the current government, the party leadership saw his ambition as a potential distraction to his father’s second-term dream,” Segun Badejo, an APC leader in Gbagada, told our correspondent.

Former governors and deputy governors, former speakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly, current and former senators, and esteemed elder statesmen and women make up the GAC, a potent 30-member political organization headed by Prince Tajudeen Olusi and founded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his time as Lagos State governor in 1999.

The rise of former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, as well as later Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was significantly influenced by the GAC.

A trustworthy insider claims that if President Tinubu is re-elected in 2027, he will finish his term by 2031, at which point Seyi Tinubu is anticipated to enter the Lagos governorship contest in order to continue his political legacy.

According to a different source, the Epe district’s resentment at the events leading up to Ambode’s removal from office was the cause.

Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe are the five districts that make up Lagos State’s administrative division, which is referred to as IBILE.

Notably, only Ambode, from Epe, was denied a second term; previous Lagos governors Tinubu, Fashola, and Sanwo-Olu all came from Lagos Island and served out their two mandates.

Stakeholders in Epe are dissatisfied with the way their local son, Ambode, was ousted from office as a result of this.

The people are still calling for the zone to be allowed to finish its term, even though Tinubu later rewarded Epe by appointing Tunji Alausa as Health Minister and then Education Minister.

Alausa or Ambode should replace incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027, according to stakeholders who allege Epe has been politically marginalized.

“The idea is not to sideline Seyi Tinubu but to ensure he has a more stable runway,” said a prominent APC stakeholder in Ogba, Ikeja, who asked to remain anonymous.

The Labour Party’s victory against Tinubu in the state in 2023 is something the party does not want to happen again.

For his father, Seyi must focus and organize the youth front.

“Running for governor would cause controversy and divide attention.”

Nigeria is a hilarious nation; they might not tolerate a father serving as president and his son serving as governor. Ambode or Alausa are currently thought to have a greater chance of winning the party in 2027, the source continued.

Heavyweights like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chief of staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the speaker of the state assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, Tokunbo Abiru, and Abdul-Azeez Adediran, also known as Jandor, are reportedly vying for the top spot in Lagos’ 2027 field.

“We have watched as other regions monopolized power,” said Olumide Balogun, a community leader. It’s time to give Epe people a voice. Ambode or Tunji Alausa ought to be our next governor.

Edafe Oghenebrume, an observer, said that it would be disastrous if the Lagos APC did not produce a candidate for governor from the Lagos West Senatorial District.

“There might be electoral challenges if Lagos APC fails to field a governorship candidate from Lagos West Senatorial district because West has been marginalized as regards the governorship seat since the emergence of democratic rule in 1999,” he cautioned.

Only Jandor, a former PDP candidate who switched to the APC in October 2025, has openly stated that he wants to be governor.

In an interview with Channels Television, Jandor stated, “I think Lagosians deserve a fresh vision, one that blends experience with innovation.”

“If I have the firm support of Mr. President and the Lagos State party, I am prepared to offer solutions that reflect the needs of the people, having seen governance from both sides of the aisle.” He continued, “It will be a walkover.

Voter perspective and public sentiment

Lagos residents and voters have been keenly observing the political maneuvers, and many have expressed a mixture of cautious optimism, skepticism, and exhilaration.

“It doesn’t matter who the party chooses,” stated Mrs. Funke Adeyemi, an Ikeja store owner. We are looking for someone who will secure jobs, fix our roads, and bring about prosperity. Lagosians are fed up with empty promises.

Tunde Olanrewaju, another resident, emphasized stability and consistency.

Tinubu has political ancestry, while Ambode has experience in governing. But we need real policies, not simply political showmanship,” he stated.

Younger voters seem eager to see a process that is more inclusive. “We need a leader who listens to ordinary people, not just party elders,” stated Chidera Nwosu, a university student. Beyond political calculations, the next governor ought to have a vision.

The path to 2027

“The party must reconcile all interests while projecting a candidate capable of winning in a competitive general election,” said Taiwo Akorede, a political strategist with knowledge of the party’s Kirikiri Town plan.

Lagos is preparing for the 2027 governorship election, which is expected to be one of the most intense and keenly followed in recent memory.

One thing is certain: Lagosians are keeping a close eye on the countdown to 2027.
