The deportees were reportedly sent back to Nigeria in three groups as worries about their treatment in the Southern African nation grew.

The committee claims that on March 24, 26, and 27, respectively, batches of 13, 16, and 11 Nigerians were brought into the nation by Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways flight SA60.

However, two of the detained Nigerians are still in Mozambique because of unique circumstances.

“Process Didn’t Follow Proper Procedure”
Abdur-Rahman Balogun, a spokesman for the commission, called the expulsion “inhumane” in a statement released on Tuesday.

Despite having legitimate identification, he said that the impacted Nigerians were arbitrarily detained, arrested, and deported.

Documents provided by the deportees indicated otherwise, despite reports that Mozambican authorities claimed immigration concerns.

Upon being received by NIDCOM officials in Lagos, a few of the returnees claimed that their money and other valuables were not given back when they were deported.

They further asserted that while they were detained, significant amounts were taken out of their mobile applications.

The panel also voiced worry over Mozambican authorities’ purported failure to inform the Nigerian Embassy of the arrests and imprisonment.

It also stated that attempts to step in by diplomatic authorities were apparently turned down.

Despite having legitimate resident permits, the 42 Nigerians were allegedly arrested at their various places of business.

Some of them insisted that they had fulfilled with all legal criteria to live and work in Mozambique and that the arrests had been made without warning.

They further said that before being processed for deportation, they were held for a number of days.

One of the two Nigerians who have yet to be deported is married to a citizen of Mozambique, and the other was born there.

In South Africa, Dabiri-Erewa Demands Calm
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman and CEO of NIDCOM, has advised Nigerians living in South Africa to maintain their composure in the wake of accusations of violence against certain people during a cultural celebration.

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa was already looking into the event, she said, describing it as probably the result of “misconception and misinterpretation.”

Dabiri-Erewa urged everyone to exercise moderation and promised that after investigations are finished, the proper actions will be implemented.

The expulsion has not yet been officially announced by Mozambican officials as of the time this news was filed.

It is anticipated that the event will give rise to new worries over how foreign nationals are treated and how the nation’s immigration regulations are enforced.

In a post made on 𝕏 on Tuesday, the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) verified the occurrence.

Dabiri-Erewa claims that representatives of the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are in charge of organizing the evacuation and making sure that those who choose to leave Iran are transported securely into Armenia.

“Officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are safely guiding the willing Nigerians in Iran across the Armenian border, ensuring a smooth and secure process for those seeking to depart,” she said.

She also gave assurances that no Nigerian has been hurt as a result of the ongoing hostilities and that embassy staff is still available at the border to help and support evacuees.

The Federal Government’s attempt to protect Nigerians overseas in times of emergency includes the evacuation, which was conducted in cooperation with Armenian authorities. It highlights the government’s attention to Middle East events and its dedication to safeguarding the well-being of its people abroad.

Following the passing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Nollywood actor Linc Edochie has warned young people in northern Nigeria from holding demonstrations in favor of Iran.

The actor reportedly issued the warning during protests by groups endorsing Iran in portions of northern Nigeria following the leader’s death on February 28, 2026, during a joint Israeli-American bombing.

After Iran retaliated by attacking Israeli and American interests in various Middle Eastern nations, tensions in the area have continued to rise. Fears of a larger confrontation involving key world powers have increased as a result of the attack exchange.

Some Northern Nigerian states staged demonstrations in support of Iran amid these circumstances.

In response, Edochie sent a video message on his Facebook page in which he advised Nigerians—particularly the demonstrators—to refrain from taking any activities that would draw unwelcome attention to the nation.

He believes that the fight between Iran and its adversaries has the potential to become one of the most destructive conflicts in history.

Additionally, he cautioned that if the issue attracts the attention of powerful nations, Nigeria lacks the capacity to confront them.

The actor cautioned Nigerians to exercise caution and refrain from doing anything that would put the country in a precarious position abroad.

Even though this may not directly affect us, let’s pray about what is going on in the globe. I regret to inform you that, despite our best efforts to avoid it, a third world war has officially started.

“This war is going to be the deadliest the world has ever seen, even though it may not be fought on conventional terms. And to those of the men up north who are demonstrating against the events in Iran, please let us get off the streets.

“A superpower shouldn’t be provoked.” We are in danger if we attract their attention. These nations’ rage is intolerable to us. Please, let’s simply accept who we are and deal with our issues as they arise.”

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has said that the Federal Government is ready to welcome deported Nigerians from the United States.

The Director of Media and Corporate Affairs of the commission, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, in an interview with Vanguard on Tuesday evening, said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was in charge of such development.

Balogun further said FG had already set up an inter-agency committee to handle the matter should Nigerians be deported from the US.

“The Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee, comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, should there be mass deportation of Nigerians from the US.”

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

However, the NiDCOM spokesperson stressed that its commission was not aware of Nigerians in America being processed for deportation.

Recall that about 3,690 Nigerians in the United States are faced with deportation as Donald Trump crackdown on illegal immigrants in the country.

In the document compiled by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations and sighted by our correspondent on Tuesday, the agency revealed the data is broken down by nationality and number of people faced with deportation.

It also clarified that as of November 24, 2024, there are 1,445,549 non-citizens on ICE’s non-detained docket with final removal orders.

In the document titled “Noncitizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship,” Mexico and El Salvador top the list of nations facing the most deportation, with 252,044 and 203,822, respectively.

The ICE is charged with the responsibility of protecting America from cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten national security.

Meanwhile, on Thursday last week, hundreds of migrants were arrested, and others flew out of the country on military aircraft as Donald Trump’s promised mass deportation operation got underway.

The TheNigerian reports Nigerians and other African illegal immigrants in the United States may be the next target for deportation by the American government.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 50-year-old Nigerian man, Jeremiah Okoye, while in police custody in Limpopo, South Africa.

The commission’s spokesperson, Abdulrahman Balogun, revealed this to TheNigerian Metro on Saturday, following reports of Okoye’s death on Friday.

Okoye, who lived at 71 Magazyn Street, Polokwane, Limpopo Province, had been residing in South Africa for 22 years before his death.

The victim, a native of Eziniffite Nnewi in Anambra, reportedly died while in police custody in Limpopo Province on January 13.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

The President of the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa, Frank Onyekwelu, confirmed the incident in a statement provided to The TheNigerian on Friday.

Onyekwelu expressed concern over the police brutality faced by Nigerians in South Africa, calling for strict adherence to the rule of law. He added, “Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of his untimely death.

“We implore all our citizens to be law-abiding and allow the authorities to utilise all their resources to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of Okoye,” he said.

Onyekwelu, as reported by The TheNigerian, added, “We hope that his death will not become a statistic like others before it. The deaths of Nigerians in South Africa, particularly under police custody, have become a recurring issue that needs to be stopped.

“We fear that these recurring deaths of Nigerians in police custody, if unchecked, will become a dangerous pattern.”

In a separate report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the NICASA president stated that he had officially notified the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate in South Africa and had also reached out to Okoye’s family and friends in Limpopo following the tragic incident.

“Nigerian citizens in South Africa say no to police brutality and killings and demand justice for the late Okoye.
