The rescue came after weeks of gruelling search-and-rescue operations launched after Mrs. Abubakar was abducted along with her husband by armed bandits, the military said.

The military said the troops continued to pressure the criminal group through a series of offensive operations and intelligence-driven missions to locate the kidnappers and free the victim.

Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village during one of the operations, which was the breakthrough.

The military said the bandits shot Mrs Abubakar and left her behind before fleeing when the troops closed in on their position and came under overwhelming pressure from the security forces.

The troops immediately cordoned off the area and rescued the victim, thereby ending her ordeal of captivity.

She was evacuated from the scene and taken to a military hospital for urgent medical care.

Mrs Abubakar is responding well to treatment and remains under close medical supervision, the Armed Forces said.

The military leadership has further assured that all the required support is being extended to her and her family to ensure her complete recovery.

The late Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Defence spokesman and a senior military officer, and his wife were abducted in an incident that raised concerns and condemnation across the board.

Following the abduction, troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA intensified efforts to track down the kidnappers with ground operations, aerial surveillance and support from the Nigerian Air Force.

The armed forces would intensify their operations to track down and neutralize those behind the abduction and continue to rid Katsina State and other parts of the country of terrorists and bandits, the Armed Forces said, quoting Major General Uba.

Security forces reportedly foiled a planned attack on students sitting their West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) based on credible intelligence, killing Battijo during a coordinated operation.

The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has since briefed the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on the successful mission following the development.

Ododo briefed Ribadu on the killing of the bandit kingpin on Monday, a statement by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation said on Monday.

The statement signed by Maryam Abubakar Gulma, narrated that during the meeting, Governor Ododo gave a detailed account of the intelligence-driven operation that culminated in the neutralization of the criminal leader, describing it as a product of effective collaboration between federal security agencies, local security structures and the Kogi State Government.

According to the Governor, highly sophisticated intelligence assets were deployed to track the movements and activities of Battijo and his gang, which culminated in the discovery of their plot to attack and abduct students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination at Government Secondary School, Iluke, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

Following credible intelligence, the Kogi State Government promptly moved the students from a vulnerable location to the heart of Iluke town to ensure their safety while they continued their examinations.

“Despite the proactive intervention of government and security agencies, Battijo and his gang attacked the community in a desperate bid to carry out their criminal mission. However, the Nigerian military troops in synergy with other security agencies, the Kogi State Vigilante Service and local hunters successfully repelled the attack. “In the ensuing fierce gun battle, the notorious bandit kingpin was neutralized and his criminal network suffered devastating losses,” a statement said.

“In a follow-up clearance mission after the elimination of Battijo, troops of the Nigerian Army led by the Commander, 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Karim Sidi, successfully exhumed the remains of the slain terrorist leader for further examination and intelligence purposes,” the Governor added.

The operation also led to neutralization of more members of Battijo’s gang who had been hiding around the area after the first encounter.

“Earlier, security forces had recovered more than fifteen bodies of bandits during clearance operations, underscoring the scale of the victory recorded against the criminal group and confirming the operation as a comprehensive success,” the statement added.

Ribadu Replies
In response, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, said the elimination of Kachalla Battijo was a major breakthrough in the country’s fight against terrorism and banditry.

According to the NSA, who described Battijo as one of the most dangerous terrorists operating in the country, his neutralization is a major milestone in the ongoing national efforts to restore peace and security across Nigeria.

He commended Governor Ododo for his commitment, courage and uncompromising resolve in fighting insecurity, noting that the feat is a testament to the effectiveness of strong collaboration between state governments and federal security institutions.

Mallam Ribadu stated that Kogi State plays a strategic role in Nigeria’s security architecture, because of its unique position as a gateway state which borders nine states and the Federal Capital Territory. He promised the continued support of the Federal Government and security agencies in consolidating the gains already recorded in the fight against criminality.

The National Security Adviser also said that the successful operation is a testament to the efficacy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security reforms and the expanding synergy among security institutions under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The fight against insurgency has turned deadlier recently with a sharp rise in killings and abduction for ransom, signaling no end to the decade-long national crisis, reports said.

Military officers and commanders are also not left out in the targeted strikes by the assailants as innocent civilians are being murdered on a relatively daily basis.

On 16th February, 2026, Boko Haram fighters attacked the Mandaragirau community in the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, killing Lt. Col O.C. Okolo.

He was buried in his home town of Obinofia Ndiuno, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State in April 2026.

The armed militants killed Maj. U.I. Mairiga the Commander, Mayenti base in Borno State on March 1, 2026, a month after the death of Colonel O.C. Okolo.

Lieutenant Colonel S.I. Iliyasu, another top military commander paid the supreme price on March 6, 2026 when Boko Haram fighters attacked a Battalion in Konduga area of Borno State.

Similarly, on March 9, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq was killed in another deadly attack by Boko Haram insurgents on a military base in Borno State.

The killings continued in April with the murder of Colonel I.A. Mohammed Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Army’s 242 Battalion in Monguno, Borno State, in active service on April 13, 2026.

It also recalls that Brig. Gen. Oseni Omoh Braimah was shot dead by members of the Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP terror group on April 9.

The latest was the sad report of the death of Retired Maj-Gen Rabe Abubakar.

The Retired General was not killed in active service, but died in the forest after being kidnapped by terrorists in Katsina State.

He and his wife were abducted on 30 May along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Rabe was last seen in a video where his captors demanded the release of some bandits and the seizure of livestock, it was reported.

In the four-minute, two-second video that has been circulating on social media, the couple were seen standing and relaying the demands of their captors.

In the video, the widow said the abductors demanded the release of three of their members, namely, Sani, Aminu and Nasiru.

She said two of the detained persons were arrested in Jikamshi and the third was in Kano.

She also appealed to Katsina State Government and the leadership of the five local government areas to assist in meeting the demands to ensure their release.

But Rabe died from complications of diabetes and hypertension, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in Katsina, Nasiru Mu’azu said in a statement on Saturday.

Nigerians react: Nobody is safe

Nigerians took to social media on Saturday with posts of their deep anger over the government’s failure to rescue General Rabe before his death.

Following the announcement of Rabe’s death, some political big wigs took to their X handle to mourn the late general and made comments on the bigger issue of insecurity in the country.

Peter Obi: ‘We cannot continue like this’

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi in a statement on X, said the unfortunate incident was painful, describing the deceased as a “distinguished military officer who contributed a large part of his life to defending Nigeria and protecting its citizens.

“It is tragic that a man who served his fatherland with honour, rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Armed Forces and retired after years of meritorious services would meet such a heartbreaking end at the hands of criminal elements.

“His death is a national tragedy and a sobering indictment of the insecurity that has engulfed our country.

“When traders can no longer safely travel to markets, farmers cannot reach their farms, communities live under the constant fear of attack and even retired senior military officers are not spared from the menace of kidnapping and violent crime, it is clear that our nation is facing a grave security emergency”.

Obi urged the Federal Government and security agencies to go beyond the rhetoric and adopt a more proactive, intelligence-driven, technology-based and coordinated approach to tackling insecurity.

“Nigeria must strengthen its security architecture, improve intelligence gathering, secure our borders, equip and motivate our security personnel and ensure that those behind these heinous crimes are apprehended and brought to justice,” he said.

It has become a national calamity – Sam Amadi

The former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Sam Amadi has said that the deteriorating security situation of the country is becoming a national tragedy. Amadi cited the killing of other top military personnel.

Amadi called the unfortunate development a sad development and asked “why should a retired General be held in the forest for weeks and the Nigerian state cannot rescue him and his wife?

“Where is the competence of the Tinubu government if it cannot save this retired General? It has happened too often to be a national disaster.

“The Nigerian government can only do propaganda and arrest political enemies and activists”.

David Mark laments: Nigerians now at risk in their own country

Senator David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, said that Nigerians are now endangered in their own country “due to the persistent threats of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes”.

In a statement by his media aide, the former Senate President said, “insecurity has continued to escalate for over a decade now, affecting every segment of society.

He called on Nigerians to unite in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality that are threatening the peace and stability of the country.

President Bola Tinubu, in a statement issued Saturday night by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, said that while the terrorists had “done their worst”, the government would never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies.

“Bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full weight of the Nigerian State,” Tinubu reiterated.

“Those windows of surrender won’t stay open forever. “And there shall be no mercy for those trading in the blood of Nigerians”

Makunde said this Friday while giving an update on the rescue efforts of the kidnapped victims nearly four weeks after their abduction.

The governor said security agencies are making concerted efforts to secure the safe release of the victims, who were whisked away during coordinated attacks on schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities on May 15, 2026.

He said intelligence reports have it that the abductees are still within the sprawling Old Oyo National Park, which covers about 2,500 square kilometres across 10 local government areas in Oyo State.

Makinde pointed out that the vast and difficult terrain of the park has created operational challenges for security personnel, requiring careful planning, coordination and sustained efforts to achieve a successful rescue mission.

The governor however assured residents that every credible lead is being pursued and all lawful measures are being deployed to ensure the victims are rescued unharmed. He also encouraged members of the public to stay alert and report suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free emergency number, 615.

He warned against spreading unverified information, saying that misinformation could hinder ongoing rescue operations, urging residents to continue supporting security agencies with useful information and to keep the abducted students and teachers in their prayers as efforts to secure their freedom continue.

“One thing I can say is that our security reports show that they are still within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis. This is a huge area that spans parts of 10 local government areas in our State and covers some 2,500 square kilometres.

I say this not to dissuade anyone, but to help us grasp the magnitude of the challenge ahead of us. This is not a problem specific to the Oriire Local Government Area.

“It’s an issue that affects all of us. The size and terrain of the area demand patience, coordination and perseverance. That also means vigilance from members of the public remains very important,” he said.

Musa was billed to speak on Friday at The Platform Nigeria 2026 edition, an annual national discourse organised to mark Democracy Day.

The event which was monitored on Channels Television was hosted by The Senior Pastor and Founder, The Covenant Nation, Pastor Poju Oyemade.

The minister, who spoke on the theme, “Governance, Democracy and National Security,” said terrorists and bandits depend on local collaborators for food, water, intelligence, logistics and funding.

He said security agencies could only achieve a lasting solution if citizens refuse and expose those who aid criminal elements.

“The people are everything. If the people are ready and willing to change, then change will happen. “If the people are not willing, nothing will happen,” Musa said.

“Let me tell you, with what is happening with the challenges we have in the country – banditry, insurgency and terrorism – why does it look like it is so difficult to deal with them? And maybe we have people who are also encouraging and supporting these things because the terrorists and bandits are living among the people.

“There are many stories of how people have helped them with food, water and information and these are the things that keep them going. We call it the oxygen. Who is paying for them? Who do they get their info from? And who are the ones providing the logistics that keep them going? It’s still the people.”

“Modern insecurity has made security operations more complex than conventional warfare,” the minister said.

“Today, security threats are often generated by the people who live among us and are part of our communities, unlike state-to-state conflicts where the enemies were easy to spot,” he said.

“Traditionally, conventional warfare was state-to-state, country-to-country. So you know who your enemy is. “The most dangerous thing in a battle or a campaign is when the enemy is inside,” he said.

“The person you are protecting might be the number one enemy who is going to try and take you out as soon as he gets the chance.”

Musa said the success of security agencies in their operations would be limited without the cooperation of the citizens despite the efforts they put in.

“It is very important for us always to remember that the armed forces and the security agencies, whatever they do, if the people are not ready to support them, it makes the task extremely difficult,” he added.

The defence minister urged Nigerians to stay united, saying that terrorists and criminal groups often exploit societal divisions.

“We have to keep working together because it is those spaces that are between us that these people see and try to widen to divide us and we must not let that happen,” said Musa.

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki also spoke at the event and said an independent legislature is key to sustaining democracy and holding government accountable in governance.

A parliament that just rubber stamps executive proposals without due diligence has failed in its constitutional duty, Saraki said.

“A legislature that cannot say no is no legislature. A legislature that only gets executive proposals, rubber stamps them, and goes home has not done its constitutional duty. “It has been a purely ceremonial role,” he said.

He said the independence of the National Assembly should not be viewed as rebellion against the executive but a prerequisite for legitimate governance.

“Independence of National Assembly is not rebellion against the government of the day. “The National Assembly is the very thing that makes government legitimate if it is independent because a mandate that is never tested is a mandate that no body can trust,” Saraki said.

Security sources told Zagagola Makama the operations came after credible intelligence that the group’s members were planning attacks in parts of the South-East.

The first operation was in the Garki area of Enugu State on Tuesday, where security operatives discovered an armoury filled with sophisticated weapons.

The raid recovered a rocket launcher, two rocket-propelled grenade warheads, three RPG chargers, three AK-47 rifles and six AK-47 magazines.

They also recovered two hand grenades, a teargas gun, two teargas canisters, 270 rounds of NATO 7.62x39mm ammunition and 478 rounds of 7.62x39mm special ammunition.

They also recovered a bandolier and a baton.

The operation was based on intelligence that the group was planning attacks in some states in the region, a security source said.

“The operation was intelligence-based and targeted facilities that were used by the group for storage of weapons and other logistics,” the source said.

The raid came just after the arrest of some suspected members of the outlawed group in the state.

In a follow up operation on Wednesday the joint security team reportedly raided another suspected armoury in the Agbani area of Enugu State.

The operation yielded eight AK-47 rifles, one smoke grenade launcher, 12 AK-47 magazines, two teargas canisters and 323 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Operatives also recovered 10 National Youth Service Corps trousers, eight NYSC T-shirts and four NYSC lanyards from the location, security sources said.

Investigations are continuing to determine the purpose of the recovered items and identify other members of the network.

This latest operation comes barely a week after DSS operatives arrested five suspected arms couriers linked to gunmen involved in the abduction of students and staff of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri Village, Niger State.

The suspects, which include two Nigerien nationals, were arrested during a coordinated operation in Kaduna, Niger and Kebbi states.

The suspects were found to be in possession of 15 AK-103 rifles, 15 magazines and 1,434 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.

Security sources said the recent operations showed the continued efforts by security agencies to dismantle networks of arms trafficking and prevent attacks by criminal and terrorist groups across the country.

He said: “In the North East, 73 insurgents were killed, 159 suspects arrested, 112 kidnapped victims rescued and 18 repentant terrorists surrendered to the troops.”
He said troops of Operation HADIN KAI conducted offensive operations against remnants of Boko Haram/ISWAP in Adamawa, Borno, Taraba and Yobe States, with a compelling succession of operational successes during the period.
During 15th – 25th May 2026, he said, the troops observed a sharp acceleration in clearance operations and an unprecedented surge in voluntary terrorist surrenders, which powerfully illustrated the irreversible erosion of insurgent morale under relentless military pressure.
Also, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA recorded encounters with armed terrorists in Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara States during the period, severely degrading hostile networks through aggressive offensive action and precision intelligence operations.
He said a total of 24 insurgents were neutralized, 13 arrested and 22 civilians rescued.
While speaking on Operation ENDURING PEACE, he said troops demonstrated unrelenting operational drive across Plateau and parts of Bauchi, Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna and Nasarawa States throughout the period, with landmark results in the neutralisation of kidnapping networks and neutralisation of dangerous criminal infrastructure embedded within civilian communities.
He said 9 terrorists were killed, 36 arrested and 15 civilians rescued.
He said that after the arrest of two kidnappers in Qua’an Pan LGA of Plateau State on 29 April, four other gang members were neutralised in their hideout during a targeted follow-up operation.
Also, a suspect was arrested along the Abaji-Kwali expressway in Abuja with 250 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition concealed in the engine compartment of a vehicle.
He said the arrest exposed the well thought out mechanisms for trafficking illegal arms within the country.
During the period, troops of Operation DELTA SAFE, conducted multi-domain offensive operations across Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers States, dismantling kidnapping networks and criminal economic saboteurs targeting Nigeria’s petroleum infrastructure.
“In all, 14 criminals were arrested, 3 illegal refining sites were destroyed and 21, 910 litres of assorted petroleum products were recovered.
Complementing the humanitarian efforts, the Nigerian Army, through Operation FANSAN YAMMA, donated 400 bags of fertiliser to farming communities in Maru LGA of Zamfara State on 13 May 2026 in a timely and impactful intervention to boost food production and to enhance civil-military relations ahead of the 2026 farming season.
“ The Nigerian Army, during a distribution ceremony held at the palace of the Emir of Maru, reiterated the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to enhancing community livelihoods through non-kinetic initiatives that complement active security operations,” he said.
The gallantry of the troops was lauded and Nigerians were called upon to give timely intelligence information to sustain the gains.
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday reserved judgment in the trial of five men accused of being involved in the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State that killed 41 worshippers.
Justice Nwite adjourned judgment to a date to be communicated to the parties after counsel to the prosecution and defence adopted their final written addresses.
The judge told lawyers that the court would let them know when the judgment was ready and the notice could come within 24 hours.
In his final address, counsel to the Department of State Services, Ayodeji Adedipe (SAN), called on the court to convict the defendants and sentence them to death, the maximum punishment for the offence allegedly committed, because of the gravity of the offence.
But counsel to the defendants, Abdullahi Mohammad, prayed the court to discharge and acquit his clients, saying the prosecution failed to establish its case against them.
The defendants are Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris and Momoh Otuho Abubakar.
The trial began on August 1, 2025, and the DSS called 11 witnesses to prove the allegations against the suspects.
The court had earlier allowed the defendants’ confessional statements after a trial-within-a-trial to determine if the statements were made voluntarily.
Also, not less than 140 persons were injured in the attack. At the commencement of the trial, the DSS had sought and secured an expedited hearing of the case.

Shaibu has called on commanders to be flexible and adaptable in fighting threats posed by terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements as contemporary military operations can no longer be based on conventional approaches due to the changing tactics employed by the enemies.
The COAS, who gave the charge at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff First Bi-Annual Conference 2026, in Abuja, equally assured Nigerians that the Army would continue to work closely with other security agencies to ensure the protection of the lives and property of law-abiding citizens.

The Army chief said that the current security environment has become more dynamic and complex and called for proactive leadership, innovation and enhanced operational capabilities.

Shaibu, who praised the officers and soldiers for their courage, resilience and determination to keep Nigeria one, said: “The evolving security environment demands that we continuously review and improve our operational strategies to remain ahead of those threatening the peace and stability of our country.

“We need to continue to be proactive, resilient and innovative in addressing these security challenges,” he said.

The conference was strategically designed to evaluate the operational realities in the various theatres of operation and to evolve practical responses to the emerging threats, the COAS said. He urged the participants to critically evaluate the existing operational methods and to identify areas that require strategic adjustments.

Shaibu, however, emphasised the need for more collaboration in the joint and multi-agency environment to enhance operational effectiveness. “No security agency can on its own address the security challenges facing Nigeria without effective synergy and intelligence sharing.

Gen. Shaibu highlighted the importance of realistic and mission-oriented training programmes in improving troop preparedness and operational efficiency. He said the Army under his leadership has continued to focus on troop training, logistics support and operational capability development to strengthen the force.

He said the Nigerian Army was still focused on building a combat ready force capable of responding decisively to contemporary security threats just as he noted that discipline and strict adherence to rules of engagement were essential to sustaining operational credibility and strengthening public trust.

He also noted that the increased professionalism of troops had positively impacted on civil-military relations and elevated the status of the Army nationally and internationally and called on officers and soldiers to continue to uphold the core values of discipline, loyalty, courage and selfless service in all operational engagements.

According to the military, intelligence information on the movement and consolidation of terrorist elements in the area prompted the strikes in the general Metele area.

Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, the Director of Defense Information, made this announcement in a statement on Monday.

The statement said that the operation was a component of continuous operations to destroy terrorist networks and deny safe havens to rebels in Nigeria.

It clarified that ISIS/ISWAP members who were seen regrouping in the region prior to the attack were the focus of the coordinated airstrikes.

The DHQ described the operation as a significant victory in the counter-insurgency operations, claiming that it eliminated over 20 terrorists.

It further stated that ongoing operations to weaken terrorist capabilities throughout the Northeast will be carried out by the Armed Forces of Nigeria in collaboration with US Africa Command.

The military added that the ongoing operations are intended to stop terrorist movements, remove combatants from the battlefield, and stop them from regrouping.

Maj.-Gen. Uba emphasized the military’s dedication to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while reiterating that there would be no safe harbor for terrorists anywhere in the nation.

The development coincides with Nigeria and the United States’ ongoing counterterrorism collaboration in the wake of recent reports of a combined operation that killed a senior ISIS-affiliated individual in the area.
