Hayatu-Deen was the first aspirant to get the party’s expression of interest and nomination documents and he further cemented his early lead in the race when he submitted the forms in Abuja on Wednesday evening.

The development signals the commencement of increased political activities within the ADC as the countdown to the 2027 general elections gathers momentum.

Hayatu-Deen, who spoke to supporters shortly after submitting the forms, said his ambition was spurred by the pressing need to confront the worsening economic challenges and insecurity in Nigeria.

He said if voted into power, his administration would work to lower the rising cost of living, create jobs and restore safety in the country.

He said his government would focus on “aggressively bringing down the skyrocketing cost of living” while offering “a clear roadmap for mass job creation”.

The presidential hopeful promised to unveil “a strategic plan to end insecurity across the federation.”

Hayatu-Deen’s early moves could make him one of the leading contenders in the ADC ahead of the party’s primary election. Political activities are expected to increase in the coming weeks as more aspirants are expected to throw their hats into the presidential ring.

Reports said the opposition party has been gaining prominence lately amid political realignments and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 polls, with a number of top politicians across party lines reportedly exploring alliances on its platform.

The ruling party raised the money from the sales of forms to two presidential aspirants, over 83 governorship aspirants in 28 states, National Assembly and state House of Assembly aspirants.

The APC made ₦200m from the sale of presidential nomination forms to President Bola Tinubu and Stanley Osifo.

The party sold its governorship forms for ₦50m, Senate forms for ₦20m and House of Representatives forms for ₦10m.

The revenue has also strengthened the APC’s coffers in the run-up to the polls even as opposition parties have failed to rally as one.

PGF Crisis Worsens
The development came amid a deepening crisis within the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) on Friday with the forum’s chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, fighting back against opposition within the group.

In a massive show of support, Uzodimma got a vote of confidence from 18 APC governors out of 31.

It was reported that the forum on Thursday had removed Uzodimma and was to replace him with Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah.

There were also reports that another group within the forum was under the leadership of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

After a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Friday, 18 APC governors expressed their support for Uzodimma’s leadership.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, who spoke after the meeting, said: “We don’t have any problem to justify what they have said. “So I want to look for this opportunity to move a vote of confidence on our chairman and his Deputy.

The Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, also dismissed the reports of division in the forum.

“What I can say here is that we all woke up with that very unfortunate story that we have virtually in all the media in Nigeria. But the truth is that the APC Progressive Governors Forum is very united.

“We’re stronger than ever. And of course, we all are supporting our President for what he has been doing.

We also want to assure everybody that APC is united, the governors are united, the forum is united, we don’t have any problem at all.

The governors present at the meeting are those of Ondo, Kaduna, Sokoto, Ebonyi, Borno, Lagos, Kogi, Kano, Yobe, Kebbi and Benue states.

The governor of Taraba State was in attendance briefly, leaving after a short meeting with the host, while the deputy governors represented Jigawa and Nasarawa states.

Idris, in moving the vote of confidence, declared Uzodimma and Sani to remain chairman and deputy chairman of the forum respectively.

Uzodimma also dismissed speculation of disunity in the APC, saying the forum was focused on the party’s forthcoming primaries.

“Governors of Progressive Congress are all united and resolved to support Mr. President and to ensure that he comes out successfully during the upcoming elections by January 2027,” he said.

“So we have decided to work harder, look after our people, show performance and provide all the necessary social interventions that make Nigerians happy and that actually is a matter of fact the resolution will have come up with this afternoon.”

APC Begins Screening of Aspirants
Meanwhile, the ruling party on Friday started the screening of governorship, Senate and House of Representatives aspirants ahead of its primaries.

The APC has slated the primaries for the House of Representatives for May 15, Senate for May 18 and the governorship primary for May 21, 2026.

The party also established two committees to screen incumbent governors seeking re-election and governorship aspirants.

The APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, led the committee that screened the incumbent governors seeking re-election. The party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, was the secretary.

The screening of incumbent governors will hold at the Plateau Governors’ Lodge, Abuja, while other governorship aspirants will be screened separately.

Dr Ben Nwoye chaired another committee for other governorship aspirants, while Emeka Offor served as secretary.

The N200 million from the incumbent President Bola Tinubu and Stanley Osifo who bought the presidential nomination forms and over 83 governorship aspirants from 28 states was not part of the funds raked from thousands of aspirants seeking the tickets of the party for the State and National Assembly.
There are however indications that the number of aspirants and the amount haul may increase following the extension of the deadline for the sale of nomination forms.

The number of governorship aspirants had surprisingly increased despite the speculated automatic tickets given to the incumbent governors or the tenure tied governors anointing aspirants.

All but one of the 17 first-term governors are up for re-election, and there’s so much consensus within the parties that primaries for 13 of them, all on May 21, will be little more than formalities.

The governors on the affirmation waiting list are: Umo Bassey Eno (Akwa Ibom); Bassey Otu (Cross River); Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta); Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi); Peter Mbah (Enugu); Umar Namadi (Jigawa); Uba Sani (Kaduna); Abba Yusuf (Kano); Dikko Umaru Radda (Katsina); Nasir Idris (Kebbi); Umar Bago (Niger); Ahmad Aliyu (Sokoto) and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).

Information gathered at the venue for the purchase, collection/submission of nomination forms, the Abuja Continental Hotels revealed that the competition is fiercest in Kwara State which has the highest number of aspirants numbering 15 jostling for the ticket.

Other states with high interest aspirants for governorship include Adamawa (eight aspirants); Oyo and Yobe (six aspirants each); Bauchi and Nasarawa (five aspirants each); Abia and Taraba (four aspirants each); Gombe and Lagos (three aspirants each) while Borno and Ogun have two aspirants each.

Sources within the party said Lagos State seemed to be settling for a unified consensus option while the incumbent governor of Benue state, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia might face stiff contest from aspirants who kicked against the consensus arrangement before the peace brokering this week.

To confirm the resolve and readiness of the aspirants for a fierce contest, Mathias Byuan, a contender in Benue had dismissed the idea of a smooth ride for the incumbent, saying: “The governor and I will test the ground. If he’s popular, let him win. If I am popular, I will win. Mr. President said people should go and test their popularity.”
He was not alone in that resolve to engage in a battle as governorship aspirants in many other states are ready to fight either the incumbent or their anointed aspirants.

In Yobe, for example, former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, in a chat with newsmen after submitted his nomination forms, made it clear that he will not step down for a predetermined candidate anointed aspirant of Governor Mai Mala-Buni.

“As he said; “I have not seen where any consensus has taken place. I haven’t been part of any consensus meeting, I haven’t agreed to support anybody. “I am passionate, credible and have the right attitude to lead Yobe.”

In the same strain, his feeling was echoed by another Yobe aspirant, Kashim Musa Tumsah, who averred: “The people want change and they asked for something different. That is why we are fighting.”
In Nasarawa, the race may take a historic turn as Dr. Fatima Abdullahi, the lone female governorship aspirant in the state, said she is ready for a “direct primary” battle.

“This is disheartening that since 1999 to date, no woman has ruled any state as a governor,” Mrs. Abdullahi said adding that she is comfortable with the grassroots-led direct primary format.

Stakeholders of the party in Kano have unanimously adopted President Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate of the party for the 2027 general elections and pledged to donate N50 million towards the purchase of his expression of interest and nomination forms.

The decision was taken at a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House, where party leaders reiterated their commitment to the continuation of the President’s leadership.

This was contained in a statement issued by Mustapha Muhammad, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Kano State.

Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi moved a motion for the adoption of President Tinubu which was unanimously supported by stakeholders at the meeting.

Also speaking during the session, the Kano State APC Chairman, Umar Haruna Doguwa, said the state chapter originally planned to buy the nomination forms outrightly, but later decided to give financial assistance in support of the President’s candidature.

“We have agreed to contribute the sum of N50 million towards the purchase of expression of interest and nomination forms for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

The stakeholders said the endorsement is a clear indication of their trust in the President’s leadership and continuing reforms, and their united determination to see the party triumphant in the 2027 general elections.

The meeting also reaffirmed the endorsement of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the APC’s sole governorship candidate in Kano State, in a bid to strengthen unity and cohesion within the party.

The Kano State Government lauded the stakeholders for their unflinching support and urged all party members to be united in moving the collective interest of the party and the development of the state forward.

Umar Bature, the National Organizing Secretary for the faction, gave the details in an election schedule that was sent to reporters on Wednesday.

The group plans to give the Independent National Electoral Commission its membership list on April 21, 2026, and then officially tell the commission about its primaries the next day.

The document says that the expression of interest form for all offices costs ₦1 million, but the nomination fees depend on the position being contested.

People who want to run for State Houses of Assembly must pay ₦2 million, House of Representatives ₦3 million, Senate ₦5 million, governorship ₦20 million, and presidential hopefuls ₦50 million.

Forms will go on sale from April 27 to May 4, and completed applications must be turned in by May 9.

On May 11, people who want to run for the State Assembly, the National Assembly, or the governorship will be screened. On May 12, people who want to run for president will be screened.

On May 18, there will be a presidential primary, and on May 27, there will be a governorship primary. The primaries for the House of Representatives will be on May 21, the primaries for the Senate will be on May 23, and the primaries for the State Assembly will be from May 21 to May 24.

All appeals should be over by May 30, 2026.

Bature also said that women who want to apply for jobs will only have to pay the expression of interest fee for the jobs they want.

The PDP is still dealing with a split within the party that has divided it into two groups. One group is led by Kabiru Turaki and supported by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. The other group is led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and supported by Wike.

There are still a number of lawsuits in court because of the factional dispute. On Wednesday, the justices at the Supreme Court of Nigeria said that the parties would be told when the decision would be made.

The APC claimed that the information circulating in the media regarding the party’s price list is false and does not originate from its authority.

The APC said that the information was fraudulent and did not originate from the Party in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.

To be clear, there has been no declaration or decision about the cost or selling of forms for the 2027 elections. According to the statement, “the report is a mere figment of the writer’s mischievous imagination.”

“We strongly advise Party members, the public, and the media to ignore the entire report.”

In the meantime, the ruling party recently concluded its national convention, which took place on Friday and Saturday in Abuja.
