John Unogwu Oche
The people of Enone Federal Constituency, comprising Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo Local Government Areas of Benue State, have continued to witness remarkable development and unprecedented representation under the leadership of Hon. Chief Dr. Bishop Philip Agbese, popularly known as Okanga 1 of Agila. Within three years in the House of Representatives, Agbese has distinguished himself through effective lawmaking, strategic constituency projects, empowerment programmes, and employment opportunities for his constituents.
His representation has been characterized by a strong commitment to improving the lives of the people through legislative interventions and grassroots development. As a federal lawmaker, Agbese has demonstrated capacity and dedication by sponsoring eleven bills and five motions aimed at addressing critical national and local challenges.
Among his legislative achievements is the Federal College of Agriculture, Agila, Benue State (Establishment) Bill, 2023, which has successfully passed the House of Representatives. The bill is expected to enhance agricultural education, research, and economic opportunities in the region. Other significant bills currently at advanced stages include the Federal Medical Centre, Otukpa (Establishment) Bill, 2023, and the Non-Oil Mineral Resources Producing Communities Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, both of which have passed second reading. These bills seek to strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure equitable development for communities hosting mineral resources.
Additionally, Agbese has sponsored several important bills that have passed first reading, including the National Drugs Law Trust Fund Bill, the NSCDC Trust Fund Bill, the Infrastructure Support Bill, the Nigerian Institute of Facilities Management Bill, and amendments to the Federal Medical Centres Act. These legislative efforts reflect his commitment to institutional reforms, national development, and improved public service delivery.
Beyond sponsoring bills, Agbese has actively utilized parliamentary motions to drive accountability and reforms. His motions have led to investigations into crude oil theft and revenue losses in the oil and gas sector, the armed robbery attack in Otukpo, allegations involving judgment debtors and audit defaulters, and environmental concerns affecting Niger Delta host communities. He also championed discussions on reviewing the nomenclature of National Assembly chambers.
At the constituency level, the impact of his representation is visible across the three local government areas. In education, over 1,500 students have benefited from bursary awards, easing the financial burden on families and encouraging academic excellence. The construction of the Chief David Attah Memorial Special Needs School in Igumale and classroom blocks in Okpakor and Effeche Ai-Ona further demonstrate his commitment to educational development.
Youth empowerment has remained a major focus of his administration. Hundreds of young people have been trained in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with 300 beneficiaries receiving hybrid laptops to support their digital skills and entrepreneurial aspirations. Additionally, the distribution of 35 motorcycles and 48 tricycles has provided sustainable means of livelihood for many families.
In sports and community development, the reconstruction of the Okpoga Township Stadium and the construction of the Akpa Olofu Civic Centre have created opportunities for recreation, social interaction, and community engagement.
The healthcare sector has also experienced significant improvements under Agbese’s representation. Notable projects include the construction of the Chief Edwin Ogbu Memorial Medical Centre in Ukwonyo, a maternity clinic in Oke Effekwo, and the installation of solar mini-grids at General Hospital Igumale and UKWO Owukpa Health Centre. The comprehensive renovation of the FMC Outstation in Effekwo, Otukpa, featuring a new 20-bed ward, laboratory facilities, solar power system, and borehole, has further strengthened access to quality healthcare services. Regular humanitarian medical outreaches have equally provided healthcare support to vulnerable residents.
Agriculture, the backbone of the local economy, has not been left behind. Through various interventions, over 300 rural dwellers received training and 15,000 live birds to boost poultry production. Farmers have also benefited from the distribution of 600 bags of fertilizer and agrochemical sprayers. The construction of a drip irrigation green farm in Apa-Agila is another strategic investment aimed at enhancing food production and agricultural sustainability.
Infrastructure development remains one of the most visible aspects of Agbese’s achievements. The ongoing construction of a three-kilometre rural asphalt road in Apa-Agila is nearing completion, while eleven motorized boreholes have been drilled across the constituency to improve access to clean water. Furthermore, the installation of 1,500 solar streetlights and several solar mini-grid projects has enhanced security, economic activities, and access to electricity in many communities.
His social intervention programmes have also touched thousands of lives. More than 2,000 constituents have been facilitated into the Federal Government’s Social Register, while 500 beneficiaries received the ₦50,000 Nano Grant. In addition, over 5,000 Hollandais wrappers have been distributed to women across Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo Local Government Areas as part of efforts to support and appreciate women at the grassroots.
One of the most impactful aspects of Agbese’s representation is his commitment to employment generation. Through his facilitation efforts, over 50 constituents have secured jobs in the Nigeria Police Force, paramilitary agencies, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and tertiary institutions, thereby creating opportunities for economic stability and career growth.
Beyond his constituency responsibilities, Agbese continues to play influential leadership roles within and outside the National Assembly. He serves as Deputy Spokesman and Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Spokesman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Chairman of the Nigeria-Finland Parliamentary Group, and Rapporteur of the Committee on Health, Labour and Social Affairs of the Pan-African Parliament.
In just three years, Hon. Chief Dr. Bishop Philip Agbese has established a record of purposeful representation anchored on legislation, infrastructure development, empowerment, healthcare, education, agriculture, and employment creation. His achievements have transformed communities, improved livelihoods, and strengthened the confidence of the people in democratic governance. As Enone Federal Constituency continues to witness these developmental strides, many constituents regard his tenure as a model of responsive and people-oriented representation.

Every child born into this world comes with great expectations. The truth is that no one truly knows what the future holds for any child. Among children born into different families and circumstances may emerge one who will transform not only his family but also his community, state, or even a nation. This is why no child should ever be neglected or looked down upon at birth, because the very child that may be ignored today could become the person who changes the story of an entire generation tomorrow.
In view of this undeniable reality, every child deserves equal treatment, proper care, love, and opportunities to succeed in life. History has repeatedly shown that greatness is not determined by the condition of one’s birth but by destiny, character, determination, and the grace of God.
The inspiring story of the Deputy Spokesman of the 10th House of Representatives, Hon. Chief Dr. Bishop Philip Agbese, popularly known as Okanga 1 of Agila, stands as a powerful lesson for humanity. His life journey clearly demonstrates how a child raised with values, purpose, and compassion can grow to become a blessing to society.
Hon. Philip Agbese was born into the royal family of the late Chief Philip Agbese from the Ikpilogwu clan in Agila. Though he came from a humble background, he was blessed with palace training and early leadership exposure. From childhood, he displayed outstanding qualities of empathy, compassion, humility, and responsibility. Leadership was naturally part of him, and he consistently showed concern for the welfare of others.
As a young man growing up, he never missed opportunities to contribute positively to humanity. He made sacrifices for people around him and extended help wherever possible. Even before entering public office, many people benefited from his kindness and generosity. His life became a testimony of service, and it was obvious to many that he was destined for greatness.
It is often said that destiny cannot be hidden. In 2023, when God called him to contest for the Enone Federal Constituency seat, he answered the call with courage and determination because he was deeply touched by the suffering and pains of his people. While helping his constituents as a private citizen without holding any public office, he repeatedly stated that if given the opportunity to serve in government, he would dedicate his resources and influence towards improving the lives of the people.
Indeed, God heard his prayers and opened doors for him, even when the journey seemed impossible. Today, as the Honourable Member representing Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, his people are enjoying remarkable dividends of democracy unlike ever before. Across the communities in Enone Federal Constituency, many voices now sing praises of his name because of the impact of his leadership.
Through various empowerment programmes, humanitarian interventions, developmental projects, and people oriented representation, the story of Enone has changed positively. Many people now have renewed hope because of the emergence of one man called Okanga. It is clear that his leadership has brought transformation, unity, and progress to the constituency.
One can only imagine what Enone would have become if such a leader had not emerged at this critical time. The people might have continued experiencing poor leadership, neglect, and underdevelopment. However, through the birth and rise of Okanga, the narrative has changed for the better.
Indeed, the birth of Okanga is a blessing to humanity. His life is a reminder that greatness can emerge from humble beginnings and that every child deserves love, guidance, and opportunity. He has become a symbol of hope, sacrifice, and service to the people. To many, he represents the Moses of our time, a leader committed to changing the story of his people and leading them towards a brighter future.
Humanity, therefore, has every reason to celebrate Hon. Chief Dr. Bishop Philip Agbese, the Okanga 1 of Agila, for his dedication to service and his firm commitment to the upliftment of mankind.

Chief Dr. Philip Agbese, popularly known as Okanga 1 of Agila.
In a brief but strongly worded internal communication made available to supporters, the federal lawmaker, widely addressed as “The Enone Servant,” ordered an immediate withdrawal of all supporters and media aides from social media engagements until further notice.
According to the directive, all online political activities including posts, comments, debates, and reactions have been suspended as the camp begins what it described as a “thorough assessment of the situation on ground across all political parties in the state.”
The statement emphasized that strict discipline and full cooperation are expected from all loyalists during the period of silence.
Political observers believe the development may not be unconnected to the growing political realignments and strategic consultations currently taking place ahead of future political battles in Benue State.
The announcement has already sparked discussions across the Enone political bloc, with many supporters interpreting the move as a sign of deeper consultations and possible strategic repositioning by the camp of the lawmaker.
Hon. Agbese, who represents the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, has remained one of the most influential political figures in Benue South in recent years, commanding strong grassroots support across the Enone axis.
While no timeline was given for the suspension of online activities, insiders say the directive is expected to remain in force pending the outcome of ongoing political assessments and consultations.
Supporters have meanwhile been urged to remain calm, loyal, and disciplined as events continue to unfold within the state’s political environment. See less

43LABOUR PARTY RELEASES TIMETABLE, FEES FOR 2027 PRIMARY ELECTIONS
The Labour Party Nigeria has officially unveiled its timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of its 2026 primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press release issued on May 3, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party stated that the schedule aligns with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act 2026, and the guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the timetable, the sale of nomination forms for all elective positions will commence on May 6 and end on May 16, 2026. Submission of completed forms is scheduled for May 17 to May 18.
Screening of aspirants will take place in phases, with House of Assembly and governorship aspirants slated for May 20, while National Assembly and presidential aspirants will be screened on May 22. The publication of screening results is expected on May 23.
The party also fixed May 24 and May 25 for appeals and petitions for different categories, while the final list of cleared aspirants will be released on May 26.
Primary elections for House of Assembly and governorship positions are scheduled for May 27, while those for National Assembly and presidential positions will hold on May 29, 2026.
The party further announced the fees for nomination forms across various offices. Aspirants for State House of Assembly are to pay a total of ₦3 million, while House of Representatives forms cost ₦5 million. Senate aspirants will pay ₦10 million, governorship aspirants ₦25 million, and presidential aspirants ₦50 million.
However, the party disclosed that the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, will be presented with the governorship nomination form free of charge.
In line with its commitment to inclusivity, the Labour Party announced concessions for women, youths aged 25 to 30, and persons living with disabilities. These categories of aspirants are only required to pay for the Expression of Interest forms across all positions.
The party also urged prospective aspirants who are yet to register as members to take advantage of its ongoing e-registration exercise. The registration window, which opened on May 3, will close at midnight on May 4, 2026, ahead of the submission of its membership register to INEC in compliance with the Electoral Act.
The announcement marks a significant step in the party’s preparation for the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for what is expected to be a competitive primary process.
