Tinubu Approves One-Year Tenure Extension for Customs Boss Adewale

Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, has been given one additional year by President Bola Tinubu.

Adewale’s retirement date was set for August 31, 2025.

The latest situation was revealed by Presidential Spokesman Mr. Bayo Onanuga in a statement on Thursday, pending the decision to permit Adeniyi to finalize important initiatives of this government and solidify existing reforms.

The Nigeria Customs Service’s modernization, the National Single Window Project’s implementation, and Nigeria’s fulfillment of its responsibilities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol are some of the justifications offered by the presidency for the tenure extension.

“The Presidency announces that the tenure of Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, which was scheduled to expire on August 31, 2025, has been extended by one year,” Onanuga said in full.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, approved the extension, which will allow Mr. Adeniyi to finish important projects and consolidate ongoing reforms, such as modernizing the Nigeria Customs Service, implementing the National Single Window Project, and carrying out Nigeria’s responsibilities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

“President Tinubu acknowledges Mr. Adeniyi’s unwavering dedication to service and leadership.

“The Nigeria Customs Service’s strategic mandate of border security, revenue generation, and trade facilitation will be further strengthened by this extension, the President is confident.”
