Tinubu Hails Nigeria’s Election Into Maritime Organisation Council

Nigeria’s election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium, according to President Bola Tinubu, is a powerful confirmation of the nation’s expanding maritime influence and its positive role in global shipping governance.

Nigeria was re-elected into Category C of the IMO Council on Friday, November 28, during the organization’s General Assembly in London, following a 14-year hiatus. This was confirmed on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Advisor to the President on Information and Strategy.

Tinubu praised Nigeria’s achievements while pointing out that they demonstrate the international community’s faith in the country’s dedication to environmental stewardship, safety, security, and rules-based marine operations.

The President praised Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, the Ministry’s employees, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for their commitment, professionalism, and strategic engagement during the election process.

He pointed out that the new IMO Council mandate is in line with his administration’s efforts to develop maritime infrastructure, boost anti-piracy efforts, unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s blue economy, and enhance the country’s reputation as a regional shipping hub.

He reassured the international maritime community that Nigeria is prepared to work with it to promote cooperation, innovation, and equity in international maritime legislation as well as safer seas, cleaner oceans, and more effective marine transportation systems.
