Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper, was sentenced to ten years in prison on Tuesday after being found guilty of shooting US artist Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during a drunken argument following a Hollywood party.
After learning that Lanez had told the hip-hop star to “Dance, bitch” as he fired several shots at her while she stood on the road, a judge in Los Angeles gave the sentence.
The punishment followed Lanez’s conviction in December for assault with a semiautomatic weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm, and transportation of a loaded, unregistered weapon.
In its proposal for a 13-year sentence, the prosecution argued that Lanez had left the “WAP” performer with physical and psychological scars.
The request made by Lanez’s attorneys was for three years in prison or probation, as well as required treatment for alcoholism.
Judge David Herriford stated during a drawn-out sentencing hearing that he had received more than 70 letters, some from Lanez’s celebrity acquaintances, advocating for him.
Iggy Azalea, a musician, was one of them. He claimed she asked for a sentence that was “transformational, not life-destroying.”
Another was from Lanez’s young son.
However, the judge mandated that Lanez, who has been detained since being found guilty, spend ten years in prison.
The use of a weapon and a victim who was especially vulnerable were two aggravating circumstances, he claimed, but the prosecution had not established that the offence constituted a high level of cruelty, viciousness, or callousness.
Megan Thee Stallion, actual name Megan Pete, was in a car in July 2020 with Lanez, his bodyguard, and her friend Kelsey Harris following a party at Kylie Jenner’s opulent mansion.
She had grown close to Lanez, whose true name is Daystar Peterson, in the months before to the incident.
According to what Harris told the court, Lanez had a “crush” on Harris, who just found out about their sexual relationship that evening. An argument ensued in the car, and Megan Thee Stallion insisted on being let to go.
The rapper from “Savage” claimed she saw Lanez shoot at her after he shouted, “Dance, bitch.”
Megan Thee Stallion expressed to the court throughout the trial her feeling that, in the wake of the shooting, she had “been converted into some kind of villain,” with the male-dominated rap scene generally seeming to be against her.
She claimed in a statement read aloud in court on Monday that she had not had “a single day of tranquility” since being shot in July 2020.
“Not only did he shoot me. He made fun of my trauma, she claimed.
