The Nigeria Police, on Wednesday, arraigned a 41-year-old truck driver, Daniel Ogunaike, before the Ebute-Metta Magistrate Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing goods worth N50m.
The defendant is facing three counts bordering on conspiracy, fraud and stealing preferred against him by the police.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Olatunde Kehinde, told the court that the defendant conspired with others still at large to commit the offences.
Kehinde said that the incident occurred on June 8, 2024, in Lagos.
He said Ogunaike stole 350 bags of cashew nuts, valued at N50m, by diverting the container carrying the goods.
The prosecutor also told the court that the defendant fraudulently converted 350 bags of cashew nuts, valued at N50m, property of Okeyson Alpha Resources.
According to the prosecutor, the offences committed contravened Sections 411, 328 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
However, the defendant, whose residential address was not given, pleaded not guilty to the three counts against him.
Consequently, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Opeyemi Ekundayo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1m, with two sureties in like sum.
She ordered that the sureties show evidence of livelihood and provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Ekundayo also ordered that the addresses of the sureties be verified.
The case was adjourned till September 18, 2024, for mention.
