A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Amawbia, Anambra State, on Monday, sentenced two men, Philip Avatus and Pius Dickson, to seven years imprisonment each, for stealing rods worth N1.1m in the state.
Both men, who hail from Taraba State, pleaded guilty to the conspiracy, theft and malicious damage levelled against them.
The court presided over by Chief Magistrate, Mike Anyadiegwu, noted their remorse and sentenced them to seven years each, with the terms running concurrently.
The suspects were accused of stealing 120 pieces of 12mm iron rods used in road construction and the offence was committed on July 24 along the Amawbia-Nise Road.
The charges violated several Sections of the Criminal Code of Anambra State.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Innocent Agu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on July 24, along the Amawbia-Nise Road, Awka, the state capital.
Agu had told the court that the defendants allegedly damaged, cut and stole 120 pieces of the 12mm iron rods used to construct drainage along the Amawbia-Nise Road in Awka.
He said the offences contravened Sections 495(a), 380(b) and 415 of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Vol. II Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991, as amended.
