Veteran Journalist, Newswatch Magazine Co-Founder Alhaji Yakubu Passes Away

Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, another co-founder of Newswatch magazine, is said to have passed away.

It was acknowledged that he passed away less than two months after Dan Agbese, another co-founder, passed away on November 17, 2025.

The Eagle Online, whose Managing Editor and CEO, Dotun Oladipo, also worked there, was informed of the development by a number of sources.

Remember that on November 4, 2025, Mohammed released his memoir, “Beyond Expectations.”

It was said that he had been sick for some time.

As of the time of publication, an official comment from the family was still anticipated.

Mohammed was born on April 4, 1950, and held a B.Sc. He was from Kogi State’s Ologba, Dekina.

St. Joseph’s Primary School, Ayangba, Kogi State, 1964; Government Secondary School, Okene, 1965-69; University of Lagos, 1972-75; and Glasgow College of Technology, Scotland, United Kingdom, 1978-79 were the schools he attended.

Throughout his media career, he held positions as Associate Editor at New Nigerian Newspapers from 1976 to 1980, Managing Editor from January to December of 1980, Deputy Editor at National Concord from 1980 to 1982, and Editor at National Concord from 1982 to 1984.

Mohammed served as managing editor of Newswatch from 1986 to 1994, co-founder and executive editor of Newswatch Magazine from 1984 to 1986, and deputy CEO of Newswatch Communications Limited starting in 1994.

Additionally, he served as a director of Lastop Limited and Yadara Nigeria Limited.

He belonged to the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Commonwealth Journalists’ Association (CJA).

In addition, Mohammed was the Pro-Chancellor and Chancellor of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, Kaduna State. He enjoys watching movies, dancing, playing tennis, and listening to music.
