A recent report has revealed that former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, was excluded from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairmanship race primarily because of concerns over his age.
Lamido, who had earlier vowed to take legal action against the party, was unable to obtain the nomination form for the position of national chairman. His protest came after the PDP adopted former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as its consensus candidate for the convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The former governor expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDPGF), accusing them of imposing a candidate and vowing to challenge what he described as an unfair process.
However, speaking to The Guardian, a member of the PDP Governors’ Forum, who requested anonymity, explained that the governors carefully weighed several key considerations before endorsing Turaki.
“In the first place, do you know how old Sule Lamido is?” the source asked. “By last August, he turned 77. Leadership is not necessarily about age, but we do not want a repeat of the challenges the party faced during Bamanga Tukur’s tenure.”
