The home council of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, was shunned by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike during his just finished “thank-you” trip of the state.
However, a local All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain informed Punch that because of the political unrest in the state, Wike deliberately avoided Opobo.
The politician, who spoke under the condition of anonymity due to the delicate nature of the issue, claimed that the minister’s choice was motivated by self-preservation.
“My brother, would you have gone to Opobo if you were the one with the current political tension in the state created by Wike himself?” he continued.
That would be submerging your hand in water that is rife with crocodiles. No one urged him not to come, no one threatened him, but I believe he told himself.
“He knows what is best for him, so give it to him.”
The source added that Wike’s experience in the nearby Bonny Local Government Area, which is near Opobo, would have strengthened his determination to avoid the area.
As we saw on TV, Bonny was empty when the minister visited. You are aware of Bonny and Opobo’s past, so it was to be expected. Naturally, he is aware that he would not have traveled to Opobo, he added.
“Nothing, but he will address himself,” the politician calmly said in response to the question of what would have happened if Wike had visited Opobo. There would have been no actual Opobo son or daughter present. He is aware, then.
Remember that Wike wrapped up his visit at Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, where a rally took place on Sunday at Rumuola’s Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic.
Supporters flocked to the location to greet the former governor of Rivers, and the event reportedly had the highest attendance of the tour. Heavy traffic jams stretched along Aba Road and Rumuola.
