Residents of Mbiabam Ibiono community in Ibiono Ibom local government area of Akwa Ibom State were yesterday thrown into mourning as a middle age man, Nkere Utah, in a fit of anger, allegedly brutally murdered his wife, Bella, 30, over alleged infidelity.
It was gathered that the suspect, a popular vulkanizer in the area, could no longer bear the escapades of her wife and mother of his five children, forcing him to part ways with her through death.
According to one Mercy Effiong, a neighbour to the suspect, “Nkere Utah, was always in the habits of accusing his late wife of fraternizing with men in the community”.
“Bella was a very beautiful lady and she liked associating with people very well in the area, and I believe that was the major reason why her husband became infuriated and took a decision to personally kill her,” he added.
The suspect, according to family source, “has had history of mental cases, but was relieved of the problem through series of medical and spiritual regimes”.
He recalled that on Sunday, the suspect and the late wife accompanied each other to the Church along with their five children, only for the woman to be gruesomely murdered by the husband the following day.
“Although he (the suspect) was in the habits of accusing his late wife of having affairs with men, I don’t know what could have triggered such dastardly act because on Sunday, they both went to Church together with the five children”, he said.
“After killing the woman this morning (Monday) at about 8:00am, the youths of the community were ready to also kill him, but he brought out his chair and machete and sat in the middle of the compound and dared anyone to come close while the machete was still dripping with blood of his late wife, before the police arrived to disarm and arrest him”, he narrated.
It was gathered that the police from the Itam Division arrested and detained him for onward transmission to the Police Command Headquarters at Ikot Akpanabia, “for further investigation and prosecution”.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Macdon Odiko Ogbeche, confirmed the incident, saying “the man suspected that his wife was having affair with people and killed her”, adding that “we have arrested him and we will soon prosecute him”.
