Probe begins as eight killed in Imo crash – Punch Newspapers

The Imo State Police Command has begun a comprehensive investigation to unravel the cause of a fatal motor accident that occurred on Sunday, at Amala, Ngor-Okpala near Owerri, the state capital.

The spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, revealed this in a statement on Monday.

TheNigerian Metro gathered that the tragic incident involved a Toyota Camry with registration number EPE 541 JO and a Hyundai Santa FE with registration number AAA 212 CD during which all eight occupants of both vehicles lost their lives.

Our correspondent learnt that the two cars collided with each other on Sunday along Amala Road opposite the Zion Ministry’s permanent location in the Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.

Okoye said further updates would be provided as investigations progressed and appealed to the public to assist by providing any useful information that could aid in identifying the victims, saying anyone with relevant details should contact the nearest police station or call 08148024755, 0803 477 3600 immediately.

He said investigations had commenced to identify and notify the families of the deceased adding that pictorial evidence had also been documented to aid further inquiries into the cause of the accident.

Also, the PPRO disclosed that police operatives from the Ngor Okpala Division arrived immediately after the incident and moved the corpses to the morgue even as they cleared the vehicles off the road to ensure free traffic flow.

He said, “In response to the incident, police operatives of Ngor-Okpala Divisional Headquarters swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. The remains of the deceased were immediately evacuated and deposited in the mortuary, while the accident vehicles were secured to ensure the free flow of traffic.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, efforts are in progress to identify and notify the families of the deceased. Pictorial evidence has also been documented to aid further inquiries into the cause of the accident.”

Okoye said the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, cautioned against reckless driving and speeding and appealed to road users to drive responsibly.

The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, strongly cautions motorists against reckless driving and excessive speeding, which remain major causes of road accidents. He urges all road users to drive responsibly, observe traffic rules, and exercise patience while on the road. Every driver must protect not only their lives but also those of other road users by adhering to established road safety regulations.

“Further updates will be provided as investigations progress. The public is encouraged to assist by providing any useful information that may aid in identifying the victims. Anyone with relevant details should contact the nearest police station or call 08148024755, 0803 477 3600.”
