Boko Haram Ambushes Food Trucks, Sets Vehicles Ablaze on Maiduguri Route

Suspected rebels from the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram have stopped a convoy of trucks carrying food to Maiduguri, Borno State.

Three dump trucks and two trailers carrying beans headed for Maiduguri were stopped by the rebels, according to Daily Trust.

According to reports, the event happened on Saturday between the villages of Burmari and Garin Kashim in the Guzamala Local Government Area, along the Monnguno–Guzamala axis.

According to reports, the rebels burned the trailer heads before escaping into surrounding bushes.

When the attack started, one of the drivers claimed to have left his car and fled into the bush.

He said the attackers were thought to be the same group that had attacked vehicles in the area around five days prior that were transporting building materials and maize.

According to another witness, the insurgents deflated the tires of the trucks before igniting them. The drivers were able to escape safely, he continued, since locals assisted in extinguishing the fire before it spread to the trailer bodies.

Drivers on the highway expressed dissatisfaction at the lack of security patrols, pointing out that soldiers are not positioned strategically along the axis, in contrast to other dangerous roads in the state.

Several truck owners have reportedly pulled their vehicles off the route due to the frequent attacks.
