The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), seems to operate more effectively when opposition leaders are involved.
In an appearance on ARISE Television on Thursday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s national publicity secretary, made the assertion in response to the arrest and detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami.
Abdullahi was worried about the perception of national anti-corruption institutions as being biased.
“To probe and investigate corruption charges and prosecute people for corruption practices, we have two national institutions funded by public money: the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission,” he stated.
However, it seems that they are only successful and efficient when opposition figures are involved. Additionally, we worry that partisan agents are being created out of national institutions.
The spokesperson for the ADC also questioned what he called selective prosecution.
“Because all you have to do is glance at the government’s side and see the types of people who belong to the ruling All Progressives Congress.” People who have previously been probed and who still have issues pending in court, but who use the broom to sweep it under the rug as soon as they join the ruling party, Abdullahi claimed.
However, he maintained that the party was not endorsing the guilt or innocence of the parties.
Therefore, we are not claiming that Malami or El-Rufai are guilty or not. He continued, “We are worried about the weaponization of institutions against opposition leaders and the bastardization of national institutions.”
