Godswill Akpabio Supports Creation of Anioma State, Proposes Warri as Capital

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, has reiterated the National Assembly’s support for the establishment of Anioma State, stating that the proposal has substantial legislative support.

Speaking to party members at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Congress in Asaba, Delta State, Akpabio made the statement.

The Senate President stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is still dedicated to the project and that the 10th Senate has continued to consider it.

He believed that better governance, balanced growth, and administrative efficiency would result from the establishment of Anioma State.

According to Akpabio, if the plan is approved, Asaba will become the capital of the new Anioma State and Warri will be the capital of the reorganized Delta State.

He pointed out that Warri already has essential infrastructure that qualifies them for the position.

He claims that the city contains a stadium, a seaport, big oil corporations, government buildings, and an airport.

Asaba will serve as the capital of the newly formed Anioma State. Senator Ned Nwoko’s initiative has the full support of the Senate, according to Akpabio.

“All of the constituent communities will enter a new phase of growth and prosperity as a result of this action. Warri will serve as the capital of the new Delta, while Asaba will serve as the capital of Anioma State.

Several well-known political figures from throughout the area attended the congress.

The governors of the states of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River were among those in attendance, along with other South-South zone officials and party stakeholders.

According to Akpabio, the push for the establishment of Anioma State is historically legitimate and represents a long-standing desire of the populace.

According to him, the approach is based on the ideas of decentralization, equity, and balanced development.

Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents the Delta North Senatorial District, was also recognized by the Senate President for his support of the project.

Nwoko revealed in November 2025 that the National Assembly’s support for the establishment of Anioma State had significantly increased.

He described the level of support as unprecedented and added that 97 senators had already signed a statement approving the idea.

He claims that as part of larger reforms, the plan is already being examined by constitutional amendment committees.
