Heavily armed militants besieged the Angwan Rukuba hamlet in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Sunday, resulting in at least ten confirmed deaths and numerous injuries.
Eyewitnesses said that the incident, which left the community’s people in complete shock and sadness, started at around 8 p.m. when the more than 20 gunmen attacked the nearby suburb of Gari Yawaye and started shooting intermittently, sending locals fleeing for their lives.
It was also reported that the incident had disturbed the peace and quiet of the neighborhood, which is home to a number of University of Jos employees and students.
A local resident described how the attackers, who were wearing the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) uniforms, arrived on their motorcycles and proceeded to move through various areas of the community during the operation, firing gunshots that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
The assailants wore NDLEA uniforms. Before firing from inside the store, they even purchased a few goods from a vendor. Luckily, the store owner managed to get away. “Four others didn’t have the same luck,” he continued.
Going on, the resident stated:
Ten people had died by the time they departed, and numerous others had been hurt by stray shots or while attempting to flee.
He continued, “It’s pitiful that the army and other security personnel arrived nearly an hour after the gunmen departed.”
Calls to the phones of DSP Alfred Alabo, the state police spokesperson, and Captain Nicholas Oteh, the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), were not returned, therefore attempts to get their responses were futile.
