The discussion about the opposition’s prospects of overthrowing the current government has heated up as Nigeria gets closer to the general elections in 2027.
Some political analysts say that President Bola Tinubu is still in a strong position to win reelection thanks to growing political coalitions and a surge of elected officials, including state governors, defecting, while others insist that the race is still open.
The opposition candidate with the best chance of running against President Tinubu in 2027 is Peter Obi, a previous Labour Party presidential candidate, according to Kingsley Wali, an elder statesman from Rivers State.
According to Wali, Obi has been successful in mobilizing a sizable amount of support, especially among Nigeria’s youth.
He claimed that Obi had a “rock-solid vote bank” in the South-East.
“I can’t really say what it is, but a lot of young people, a lot of first-time voters, a lot of people who are disenchanted with the system just have a way of moving towards Obi,” he said.
They believe he can make a difference for some reason. And Mike, I’m constantly reminding people that Peter Obi is the only politician in Nigeria now with a strong support base.
Wali emphasized that many Nigerians dissatisfied with the existing political climate saw Obi as a viable alternative capable of bringing about significant change, even though he refrained from characterizing him as the perfect politician.
He claims that this view is particularly strong among South-Easterners and some Christian groups in Northern Nigeria, who believe Obi represents their goals.
“I’m not sure if I like Peter Obi or if I agree with his politics.” On an average day, I wouldn’t consider him to be the best Nigerian politician.
However, I am aware that many Nigerians who are fed up with politics just believe that Peter Obi can change things.
“They have persisted with him for some reason, which is why I believe that Peter Obi is the only Nigerian politician with a vote bank right now.
“When I refer to the vote bank, I mean the South-East. It is distinguished by the fact that the majority of people in the South-Eastern region believe he is their best opportunity to run for president.
Additionally, many first-time voters, moderates, and Christian belters in the North believe he embodies their greatest hopes.
He is seen by many who believe they have been bound by fundamentalism as the embodiment of their dream of a Nigeria free from religious intimidation and prejudice.
“So, in my opinion, he is the one that the majority of people in this demographic see as their chance to break free from any kind of dominance, real or imagined.”
Wali, however, warned that although Obi’s supporters are fervent, they might not yet represent a majority of the country.
“However, you and I are aware that it is insufficient for a specific group of people to declare their desire for you to become president of Nigeria.”
“Being principled is insufficient,” he continued. Even if you are morally upright, it could work against you. People perceive you as being extremely inflexible, unyielding, and unadaptable.
“Therefore, they want to work with someone who is somewhat more accommodating and accommodating of other interests in Nigerian political demography.”
Wali commented, “First and foremost, I’ve heard people say stuff like Obedients will not support anybody apart from Peter Obi, which I think is a bit of political naivety,” in response to Obidients’ claims that they would only back Obi. Because individuals who are creating all of that noise ultimately don’t run in the party primaries.
Obi must therefore first bargain his way into the gathering. Because you need to obtain the party ticket in order to participate in the main election, where you will be able to demonstrate your popularity among first-time voters, moderates, and everyone else. And none of these individuals have the authority to affect it.
He emphasized that the former governor of Anambra State must first solidify his position inside his own party by winning the party’s presidential ticket through a calculated and inclusive process and gaining the support of important stakeholders.
He also suggested that in order to convince powerful members of his party that his rise would not jeopardize their interests, Obi would need to engage in cautious political discussions.
Wali went on to say that greater opposition unity would be essential, implying that in order to greatly increase Obi’s chances in the general election, important political personalities like Atiku Abubakar, Chibuike Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, among others, would need to support him.
Therefore, I think that in order for Obi to have that effect, he needs to look for and, to use a political term, establish agreements with party members who are confident that an Obi administration won’t negatively affect their selfish goals or interests.
“Which is why I said that he needs to cut deals with all of these people, all of them Atikus, all of them Amaechis, all of them Mallam El-Rufais,” Wali continued.
These individuals essentially have powerful constituencies under their control, and if they band together, they may decide the conditions of imprisonment.
Let me go back a little and say that Buhari was originally brought up at the Lagos Convention in 2014 by this kind of alliance, this rainbow coalition.
“As a person, Buhari would not have been able to overcome Atiku, Kwankwaso, Rochas Okorocha, and all of that and bring the tape above and beyond.
However, he needed a few young supporters and moderates who thought this man had a lot of political acumen. Let’s give him more attention than these other individuals. Perhaps at that moment, they thought of themselves as hawks.
Wali continued by cautioning that Obi cannot afford to wait for a unanimous nomination to be given to him, pointing out that the road to the president would necessitate strategic compromise, coalition building, and intentional work.
Therefore, Obi must make concessions if he is sincere about being the president of Nigeria and the ADC’s presidential candidate.
“And that’s the only way he can become the ADC candidate or win the president.
But it won’t happen if he’s waiting for someone to provide him with the presidential ticket on a golden platter. It is not going to occur.
