Tanimu Turaki, the Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, said that he took a group of party members to visit the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is led by David Mark, to show support.
Turaki said that the meeting was an important time to think about things and that everyone there was committed to protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
On his 𝕏 page, the PDP leader said that the event brought together important political figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other ADC leaders.
He said that the main topic of conversation at the meeting was the problems that all of the country’s opposition parties face.
Turaki said that the visit showed that opposition leaders are starting to realize how important it is to work together when political pressure is rising.
He said that the PDP delegation included Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Adolphus Wabara, the party’s Board of Trustees Chairman, and Jerry Gana, a founding member of the party and former Minister of Information.
Turaki noted that discussions during the meeting were frank and focused on the political headwinds facing opposition parties, which he said reflected a broader pattern affecting democratic plurality in Nigeria.
He also said that both sides were determined to protect democratic values and make sure that people who disagree with them have a place to speak out in the country.
Turaki also said that the meeting showed how important it is to keep a strong opposition party in Nigeria’s democracy.
The PDP chieftain further described the visit as a demonstration of collective responsibility among political actors to put national interest first, protect democratic values and work towards a more inclusive political future.
The statement said, “Yesterday, I had the honor of leading a delegation from our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on a visit to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to show our support.” It was more than just a formal meeting; it was a time to think, share worries, and reaffirm our shared duty to protect Nigeria’s democracy.
“As we sat across from well-known leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other ADC leaders. It was clear and sobering: the problems that opposition parties in Nigeria face today are real, shared, and require everyone to work together.
“I felt a great deal of responsibility when I led this group, which included well-known people like His Excellency Seyi Makinde, Adolphus Wabara, the former Senate President, and Prof. Jerry Gana. Not just to represent the PDP, but to stand in defence of democratic ideals that transcend party lines.
“We talked openly about the political and other pressures that opposition parties are facing.” These things don’t happen in a vacuum; they are part of a larger trend that threatens the very idea of political diversity in our country. We came not only in solidarity, but also with a shared determination because we had seen similar problems in our own party.
The most important thing was the spirit of respect and understanding between people. Even though we had different political views, we all agreed that democracy must be protected, voices must not be silenced, and there must always be room for healthy opposition.
