In Monguno, Borno State, a Nigerian Army Commanding Officer and six soldiers were killed when their vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) late Sunday. This was a deadly turn of events after a successful military operation against insurgents.
The tragedy happened just a few hours after troops from Sector 3, Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI stopped terrorists from getting into the Charlie 13 area. The insurgents, who attacked at night, got into a gunfight and had to pull back when troops held their ground.
It was said that the Commanding Officer was on his way to the front lines to check on the situation himself and raise the spirits of his troops when the event took place.
On Monday, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Operation HADIN KAI, said that the officer’s car hit an IED, which exploded right away, killing him and six other people.
Uba called the dead officer a brave leader who led from the front and cared deeply about the safety and effectiveness of his men, even when things were very dangerous.
Military leaders said that his actions showed the core values of duty, professionalism, and sacrifice, and that his legacy would live on in the Armed Forces.
Operation HADIN KAI honored the dead soldiers by calling them heroes who gave their lives to protect the country. The military also said again that it would keep working to defeat the insurgency in the North-East.
The event shows how dangerous hidden explosives are in conflict zones, even after fighting has stopped, and it shows how unstable the security situation is in the area.
