The Osun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party-aligned Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has spoken out against a recent protest by council chairmen who were elected under the All Progressives Congress.
The PDP-backed ALGON leadership said on Thursday that the APC chairmen’s claims that the state judiciary had ignored court orders in matters related to local government administration were false.
On Wednesday, the APC council chairmen held a protest at the entrance of the Osun State High Court in Osogbo. They were protesting the ongoing trial of commercial bank officials who were involved in local government allocations.
During the protest, the protesters held up signs that said things like “Say no to disobeying court orders” and “Disrespecting court decisions is an invitation to anarchy.”
Kolapo Olayanju, the chairman of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Authority, spoke for the protesters and said that the state judiciary and Governor Ademola Adeleke were not following the law.
The PDP ALGON leadership, on the other hand, said the protest was wrong and questioned why it happened.
The protest was called “embarrassing and disgraceful” in a statement signed by the chairman, Sarafa Awotunde, and the secretary, Lukman Afolabi.
It said that the APC chairmen had stayed in charge of council administrations even after their terms were up.
The statement says, “They have been in council offices for about 14 months after their term was supposed to end in October 2025, and they have kept collecting money that was supposed to go to local governments.”
The PDP group also asked why the APC chairmen chose to protest at the court instead of letting the legal process run its course.
“Do they want to stampede the courts? The statement said, “If they are sure of their claims, they should let the court of law decide the matter.”
Reports say that the disagreement shows the ongoing fight between officials elected in the October 2022 local government elections and those elected in February 2025 over who has control of council areas in Osun State.
