Amaechi Declines Alleged Request to Step Down for Obi’s 2027 Bid

According to reports, Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation, turned down Peter Obi’s request for him to step down for him before the 2027 presidential election.

Leadership learned from sources that the appeal was made at a meeting at Amaechi’s home in Abuja over the weekend.

People said that Achike Udenwa, a former governor of Imo State, and Senator Victor Umeh were with Obi.

Amaechi, Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have all said they want to run for president in 2027 as members of the African Democratic Congress, which is led by Senator David Mark.

The Independent National Electoral Commission set party primaries for April 23 to May 30, and parties must choose between direct primaries and consensus arrangements.

A person who was at the meeting said that Amaechi turned down Obi’s request and made it clear that he was serious about running for president.

The source said that the former minister “politely turned down the request of the former presidential candidate.” They also said that his decision to run was not just for show.

Eze Eze, a leader of the ADC and an ally of Amaechi, said that the former governor would not drop out of the race.

He said, “Amaechi thinks that if he loses the primaries, he will back whoever wins, and he would expect the same from other candidates if he wins.”

“As of now, Amaechi is not going to step down for anyone.”
